We may have a few more rare chances of hearing Mme, Patti sing, but on December 1 she bade farewell to the London public which has worshipped her so long, and there will be no more of the Patti Concerts at the Albert all which have become so much part and parcel of our musical life.

Mme Patti herself was singing so beautifully on Saturday that one may be excused, for

doubting the necessity of the step on which she bas decided, but there is doubtless much wis dom in leaving her admirers with memories of onthing but perfection.

In order to have some justification for their apposition, the agitators would make out that the terms of the agreement are prejudicial to China's interests and give more to the foreign Corporation concerned than is consistent with the country's sovereign rights. statement there is absutely no foundation as it is a matter of caninen knowledge, fully borge out by the summary of the Agreement already published in the native Press, that there has been no attempt on the part of the Corporation to carry through more than an ordinary commercial deal with the Chinese Government. He has the reputation of being a sound lawyer and a good judgei and is a straightforward official, absolutely devoid of bunkum, and a hard worker, one who has worked his way upwards by sheer merit. Should he come to the Straits, the gain: will be ours. Apart from his official career, Sercombe Smith has points to recommend him. He is a good sport, and has long been prominent as a cricketer and lawn tennis player. He was a player in the Interport mat- ches in Shanghai, Hongkong and Bingapore, and on some occasions has captained the Hongkong teams. He was good alike with bat and ball. His many friends, as we have already said, would welcome him to the Straits; but it is by no means improbable that he may remain in Hongkong in the hope of obtaining the Attorney Generalship or the Colonial Secretaryship should Mr. F. H. May (at present acting as Governor) be translated, as he well deserves to be, to a higher position elsewhere. In Mr. May and Mr. Sercombe Smith, Hongkong has two of the best officials it has had in its whole history.
