ORIENTAL TRADE FALLACIES.

The decline in the export of the United tates to China and Japan as compared with 100s has led to considerable misunderstanding. The United Kingdom and other nations have suffered similar loises, showing that there was nothing peculiar in the decrease in American exports.

As has been explained in consular reports, the exports in got were abnormally large,DEAUX, 1ORT, SHERRY, WHISKY, &c, owing to the lack of all kinds of merchandise | &c., from the most renowned houses in France

in Manchuria, caused by the war. There was a rush after the war to fill the gap, and that caused a large increase in the imports, But Formal conditions have now followed, and while the importations have fallen off, they still remain above the normal of years preceding

the war.

For the eight months ending with August, 1906, the exports from the United States to China were in value $22,316,216, as compared with $47,300,996 in the corresponding months of 1901,

But the largest exports in any preceding PORT year were $17,013,848 in 1902, showing that the exports this year are $5,000,000 greater in eight months than they were in any year preceding 1905. The experts to Japan for the eight months aggregated S20,753,377, as compared with $39,174, 82 in the eight months of 1904. But only once before, and that in 1900, were the experts to Japan for the coresponding time greater than they were this year, while in 1501 z and up to and including 1904 they were very much less than for 1905. The exporis to Asia and Oceania for the eight months of this year

were in value $86,611,375, which was much

larger than in any year preceding 1905, but in the eight months of 1905 the exports aggregated $116,225,663,-Department of Commerce and Labour Bulletin.

RACH SUICIDE IN ENGLAND,

The English people is threatened in Great Britain by either physical degeneration or race. suicide, says Sydney Webb, the London pub-; licist and professor of political economy. He treats the inatter, in the London Times, from a purely economic standpoint, People will not marry because they can not afford it, and the burden of rearing and educating children to those who are married is too heavy to be borne. The consequence is a diminishing birth-rate amung the most desirable elements of the people. The dregs of the population, he mainusins, multiply-hence the danger of Jeterioration. Meanwhile immigrants from foreign countries have, large families and are supplanting the Anglo-Saxons. Be proposes that as privileges were granted in ancient Rome to the man who had three children, so the Government should subsidize the parents,
