THE BLIND ALPHABET..

Of the various methods of "Blind Alphabets”, Braille is much the simplest and the best known among the blind; consisting; as it does, of a series of raised characters; accordingly our Edition for the Blind will be reproduced entirely in Braille.

As early at the sixteenth century. à Francesco Lucas by name, în- Spaniard, vented a method of reading for the blind by means of letters engraved upon blocks of wood; and which he afterwards dedicated' to' King Philip II. of Spain. It was not, however, until 1829 that Braille, in its present form, wan discovered by a certain Lou's Braille, a blind pupil is the "Institution des ; unes Aveugles"! at Paris..

Louis Braille was the son of a harness maker, and at the early age of three he took if into his head to imitate bis father's work." lå d mement the sharp instrument be used flow up. and, put out one of his eyes. Infiammation ruined the other, and left him completely blind. At the age of ten be went to the School, for the Blind, and it was here that he made the discovery with which his nama will be ever. nasociated.

Since that time the use of Braille has spread to most parts of the civilised globe, and it is to- day the system used in the British Empire, an the Continent of Europe, in Mexico, Brazil and FXPRESSES, Egypt. The United States of America baya adopted a modification of Braille now known as New York Point.
