beg of Gye, the Covent Garden, manager to be allowed to sing for nothing-an offe, which she did not, afterwards repeat to any manager-- and it was only after some persuasion, that she secured an appearance. I have no space bere to attempt any sketch of Mme. Patti's splendid career; besides, as 1 have remarked, it is history by now. We all I know that she has worn £400,000 of jewels an the stage; that she has received!£1,300 a night, that kings have been deferential to her; and so on. Suffice it to say that the capitals of almost every civilised country have been conquered by hor

A LENGTHY REPERTOIRE,

I am not old enough to have heard Mme Patti's voice in its prime, but anyone who listens to ber singing now can discera the perfection of her method and the smooth, velvet-like quality of many of her notes. If you think that years ago she sang easily up to F in alt, and that her voice throughout its huge compass was always of that brilliant and liquid quality, you can easily picture the furore the young singer must have made in the days when our fathers want to the opera-days when the singer was first and the music nowhere..

Apart from her voice, 'Mme. Patti has had many talents. She has always acted well, learning stage "businose" when, as a tiny child, she stood in the "wings" and watched the performance of others.

It has often been urged against the great singer that she has unduly neglected modern *music.

She has, of course never sung any Wagner rôles, not because she does not like the music for Patti has always publicly avowed her admiration of the master, and has regularly attended Bayreuth-but probably because sho falt the limitations which every artist has." Mmo. Patti was not in the heroic mould of a Brünnhilde or anilsolde. No one could ever fancy her in either of those rules, and I am sure the great body of Her admirers have never *wished her to be a Wagnerian heroine. Her Southern naturo naturally inclined to Italian arl, and as an exponent of bel canto in the opera of Mozart, Donizetti, Bellini, Meyerbeer, Verdi, she has stood alone and unrivalled.

Also, ano cannot accuse Mme. Patti of "having had a limited répertoire, since she knew 43 rôles during, her operatic career: French and even English opera did she appear in. Gound spoke of her as the peerless Marguerite, Rossini lopked upon her as an ideal interpreter of his heroines, and Auber considered her perfect In Mozartian music

OLD ENGLISH SONGS. <---From-the time that the-made- England—or, rather, Wales-her home Mme. Pati appearce *a good deal on our concert platforms, in the spare-intervals between her opera work. Her last appearance at Covent Garden was in 1895- ip “La Traviata," on which occasion her dislay of jewels was,.memorable. Musical amateurs baye known Patti during the last decade chiefly as a ballad singer. In that capacity the great Finger has earned the gratitude" of all English falk for her rescue from partial oblivion of many of our beautiful nid English songs, suchVictoria, Swed, s.., 989, J. A. Hellberg, 14th Dec,-Sourabaya and Samarang 30th Pas those of Bishop, the, composer of "Home, Nev., Sugar, Molassas and Gen.-Aagaard,

sweet home."

If you want to hear how a perfect art brings Tout all the latent beauty of those old þallads of ours, go to hear Patti to morrow. She will probably have to sing a good many of them. before her enthusiastic admiters will allow her to leave the platform.-Henry J. Coates in Morning Lender.
