for colllery working, which project is to be completed within seven years. This work was to have bees commenced last year, and the cost "way then estimated at Y&co,coo, to be. kept independent of the General Budget.

An estimate of Y170,000,000, to be defrayed in nine equal annual instalment", for the ro adjustment of the navy, har besa completely struck out, but the 'estimates for additional ships, the extension of naval yards, and the education of officers and men have been an proved with small reductions. It has also been arranged that about Y75,000,000 should be set aside lo a period of seven years for the maintenance of the existing force of the fleel, which is considered of urgant importance.

It was further privately agreed, when the estimate for the special incidental expenditure for this year came up, that about Y200,000,000 should be appropriated in asoval instalments for the cost of new ships, the restoration of the

flost and armaments to an efficient state, and "for repairs and extension of buildings. It has now been finally agreed that the annual instal. ments, lose Yr6,000,000 per annum, will be raised-Japan Chronicle.

A MONSTER MATEOR.

STRANGE SIGHT AT SEA,-

New York, November 10, That many of the ships that have never come to port and whose mysterious disappearance cannot be accounted for were sunk by meteors is a theory advanced by Fint Officer V. Spen. cer, of the Phoenix line steamship"St. Andrew! When the boat was a hundred miles east of Cape Race the ship passed through a meteoric shower, and one of the star fragments dropped within a short distance of the boat within fi1 view of many of the crew.

J

The shower took place just before sundown on Tuesday evening of last week. The Hamburg-American steamship Brasilia has also an entry on her log of having sighted a -star shower, 150 miles from the place where the other boat saw the phenomenon.
