"ÏMMUNITY IN TUBERCULOSIS.

Dr. Simon Flexner, of the Rockeféller In- stitute for Medical Research, of New York, is he author of an Interesting paper on immo- aity in tuberculosis that appeared in the Sept- ember issue of Popular Science Monthly. The paper is a review of the work of patient expe- simenters in this' line of inquiry, and begins with the purposeful transmission of this dis- ease from animal to animal by inoculation by those experimenters immediately preceding Koch,

Knowledge of the nature of the tubercle bacillus enables a recognition of several dis- tinct kinds,' classified from their sources into human, bovine, avian, and a group derived from cold-blooded animals. The last class differs from the others in that the first three re- quire high temperatures for their growth and do not thrive underordinary external conditions. The tubercle bacilli of cold blooded creatures cannot cause disease in the warm-blooded suimals. This is a wide difference, but is of but little Importance, chiefly because of its wide difference. Of greater consequence are the differances, fundamentally, among the several other kinds.

The first port to call at was Gibraltar, whence the squadron proceeded to Naples, where the West Virginia and Pennsylvania anchored, while the Colorado and Maryland went on to Palermo. Thence the You have printed three letters from Mr. cruisers came on to Pait Said and thereafter to Nielsen, ostensibly, written to prove that the Bombay. The field of experimentation, in inoculation and is offecia has been necessarily limited because of th⚫ obvious impossibility of carrying the tests of pathogenic action from domestic aainuls to the human organism, There is a belief, however, expressed in many regulations against the use of infected meats and milk, that bovine bacillus is powerfully pathogenic for man. That it is for lower animals has been proved.

Microscopic observation has demonstrated that numerous avenues exist by which the tuber cle bacillus may be transmitted and finally

Banism; 20, while Dr. Koch only recently said that bovine tuberculosis differs so much from human tuberculosis that its transmission from cattle to human being is not to be feared, Dr. Flexser expresses the belief that the time is not yet ripe to disregard this disease in domestic animals.

The conclusion of Dr. Flexner is also the

tocclusion of Dr. Leonard Pearson and others, and should be obvious to the reader, that differ

ultures have different immunizing values; ent cultures that a tuberculous organism develops defences against subsequent tuberculous infection, which the normal body does not possess, and that the employment of tuberculin. indicates that a diseased.body can be roused artificially to overcome its affliction.
