The conclusion we come to is that, with the influx of a prac- ticular class of traders we arrive at base goods, since it is irrefutable that, while they have helped on the trade of Hongkong, at the same time they have introduced commercial methods which were formerly unknown. Piracy of trademarks has never been a characteristic of the Chinese, so that when a case arises similar
to that referred to, we regret that a firm of standing should be placed in the position of defendants. They had no power over their agents, and they accepted the merchandise seat to them in the best of good faith. SALVING THE FRONDE
BY THE "PROTECTOR."
SUCCESS ANTICIPATED.
OTHER OPERATIONS OF THE "PROTECTOR."
This morning a representative of the Tele- graph made a voyaga of inspection to Kowloon with the object of seeing what work had been accomplished by the Danish snivage-steamer Protector towards raising the Freech torpedo- destroyer Fronde, which received such disastrous treatment during the typhoon of the 18th September, and which, to the eye of the casual beholder, was pounded against and thrown up upon the shore, just east of the Naval Camber, with ribs and hull broken beyond redemption.
This, however, so far as the inspection of divers has shown, does not appear to be the case, since from our interview of this forenoon with the gentlemen in charge of the salvage operations, we learn that they are confident of raising the vessel.
In the absence of Captain Silverberg, the Commander of the Protector, our representa ive had a-most interesting interview with Mr.

The divers then tightened up her hull with planks, canvas, mats, and õakum, and the pumps were then got to work and; figsted" "ber, These operations, owing to there being no spring side, took between six and seven weeks, instead of the three weeks in which the Pro- tector would ordinally have been able to float the Hengaha
The next move of the salvage steamer, after Naval authorities, will probably be to turn her the conclusion of ber contract with the French attention to the German s.s. Petrarck, whose plight there is no necessity to describe.
