Mr. Tosa, Managin Director of the 'unna Steamship Co., speaking recently with refer- ence to the prosperous condition of the Japan- China trade, auributed it to the growth of the purchasing power amongst the Chinese people, chiefly brought about by the rise in the price THE Steamship of silver and the lower.n. of shipping freight. Generally speaking, the economic conditions China have been very favourable of late years, though the wholesale minting of copper coin in order to relieve the financial pressure of certain localities has given an adverse effect to a certain extent. The keen competition which is now going on between the Japanese and foreign, steamship companies has resulted in a great reduction of freight and passenger The reason that the competition has not weakened the participants is bec use the re duction in freight and passage has resulted in u great increase in the quantity of cargo and the number of passengers, and thus the competitore are enabled to make good, 10.a large extent, what otherwise would be atainous lose. The lowering in freight has again created an increas. ed demand forJapanese articles in China, and theit export is rapidly increasing. However dis tasteful the situation may prove to the steam ship companies who are engaged in the com. No. 35, DES VEUX Road CentrÁL. The present fise in the price of silver, con- tinued Mr. Tosa, is by no means an insignifi capt factor in the, encouragement of China trade. The fuctuations of silver are always silver fell to from 21 to 32 pence, and though I greatly recovered its price in 1904 it did not rise above 28 peace. Since November last year it had been oscillating in the neigh bourhood of jo pence, but it has now risen above 32 pence. This has visibly increased the purchasing power of the natives and stimu- lated the demand for Japanese goods. Mr. Tosa concluded by urging that Japan should now take full advantage of this circunstâncè as well as the prevailing 'owness of freight to exlead the sale in China of the articles she can produce, Japan Chronicle.

and also to the exclusion of Japanese children THE P. & O. S. N. Co.'s Steamer from the public schools,

According to a telegram received by the Japanese Government op Monday from Mr. Uyeno, Japanese Consul at San Francisco, the people of San Francisco lend no ear to the re- peated protests of the Japanese Coniul, and persist in their views. The Japanese children [9 who were expelled from the schools have not yet been allowed to be reinstated. The San Francisco citizens declare that the cen. tral Covernment has,so authority to interfere with the separation of Asiatic children, from -American in the schools, on the ground that the segregation is carried cut on the strength of powers vested in the State. The boycott of the Japanese restauran's has been stopped, but there are still signs that the naik Japanese feeling of the public in general still remains high. The Japanese Consul, in concert with Mr. Metcalf, is taking all necessary measures 10 relieve the situation.
