PORTLAND CHMENT,

EFFECT OF THE TARTHQUAKE., Rather to the surprise of the four-and-twenty directors and managing director who occupied the platform at the annual meeting last month of the Associated Portland. Cement Manufac. turers, the report-providing more cheerful. reading than the past, but revealing that the business-i-handicapped with excessive capital —was passed without a word of comment fram the large body of shareholders, who 'filled three-parts of the great ball at Winchester

House.

The chairman, Mr. F. A. -White, had by no' means a satisfactory position to face. At the very ontset, indeed, he made the statement that the whole of the savings in manufacture and management had been neutralised by the continued decline during the greater part of the year, in the selling. price of Portland cement. The fall during the past six years, he said, had amounted to many shillings per too. If the price had remained the same as it was six years ago they would have made a profit of half a million more, less, of course, any extra cost of materials.

With regard to the savings effected in man. agement expenses, the chairman mestioned

that they had reduced by £5,300 the managing director's remuneration, and the directors' and trustees' fees, and that they had already, saved more than £2,0-0 by the termination of staff agreements, and would be caving in the course of this year a further Livon, thus diminishing by a total annual.sum of £8,500 what were the fixed charges by agreement in the earlier years of the company's exis'ence.

SAN FRANCISCO.

Dealing with the future, the chairman refer red to the earthquake in San Francisco, from which, despite unofficial anticipation to the contrary, they had not derwed any consider- able increase in trade during the past financial year. From the photographs of the stricken city it seemed that scarcely any buildings had

ly of cement and steel, an' there could be no doubt that in the erection of the new city ferro- concrete would he exclusively used, and that the lesson taught by its use would spread to all parts of the world. Some time ago the Uni ted States and many continental countries recognisedthe advantages of using cement more freely, and it was interesting to God that in this country their example is gradually being followed in the erection of ferro-concrete build- ings.

Against, any benefit to be derived from the rebuilding of San Francisco, the chairman, however, mentioned that their prospects of advantage from the Panama Canal had been completely overthrown, by the decision to em ploy in its construction only such cement as was manufactured in the "nited States.

Generally, however, the chairman said, in conclusion, he looked to improvement in the coming year, and not to further retrogression. With the revival in various branches of trade there was no reason why the price of cement should alone be lower than it had ever been and as to their own position, their large capital expenditure (£130,000) had been the means of Increasing efficiency of their plant and machinery in a marked degree..
