PETROLEUM COMPANIES.

Important negotiations have lately been proceeding between the Shell Transport and Trading Company and the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company with the object of amalgamating the two great Far Eastern oil concerns and thereby uniting their forces to resist the competition of the Standard Oil Company. The matter is of the utmost interest to those resident in, the Far East, THE Resident of Perak, Mr. E. W. Birch, for it may portend a more definite stand... has ordered the twe Brahusin's who are against the American Oil Trust than has hitherto been made. But the proposed amalgamation or 'unification of strength is scarcely likely to affect seriously the interests of shareholders in the two companies, for the simple reason that they have worked on a basis of mutual understanding for some years. Rumours have been rife for some tipic past that these negotiations were in progress, but nothing definite was known as to their character. In these circumstances the Shell Company has thought it wise to issue a circular detailing the nature of the agreement which it is proposed to ratify with the consent of the shareholders. The circular states that it is proposed to form a new company, or adopt some means to merge into one interest the profits and losses as well as the assets and liabilities of the two
