SIRT. LIPTON AND THE CUP“

PROSPECTS OF A "SHAMROCK THE

FOURTIL"

With reference to the possibility" that has been mentioned that Sir Thomas Liptna may make knother attempt next year to win the America Cup, much will dopend, 'I balleve, on the conditions that would be allowed to govern the race, says a correspondent to the P.M. G. On this poļut the position at the present time in somewhat uncertain. It may be recalled that two years or so ago Sir Thomas Lipton wrote to the New York Yacht Club asking whether they would considere challenge under their new rule-the "Univer sal rule," as they called it. They repiled some- what indefinitely that they would be glad to consider the question when the challenge was sent; and there the matter has since rested,

The value of the new rate is that it encour ages a more wholesome type of boat and dis courages by handicapping excessiva dimen. sions, anything of an extreme or freak nature. In the opinion of yachting experts in this county there is nothing to encourage Siz Thomas to challenge again under the old con- ditions, and it is fully recognised that it can be no easy matter, even under the new rule, to design a boat that will have a reasonable chance of winning the race against the accumu-" lated experience of Barr and Herreshoff Au English-built boat has not only to stand the test of an ocean voyage, but it has also practically to be refitted when it reaches the other side- two very severe conditions from which the the American boat is, of course, entirely exempt. To have a real hope of winning therefore, Sir Thomas, it is pointed out, would have to select a designer who could build some. thing better than Herreshoff, and that is a very difficult proposition. It should not, therefore, he too readily assumed, because Sir Thomas Lipton happens to be setting out on a visit to America, that next year will see another race for the cup. Nothing, at any rate, kas yet been `décided, although yachting men, both here and in America, would ba'delighted, I believe, if an- other face could be arranged. Sir Thomas has already tried with three Shamrocks, and under ordinary circumstances, three attempts would be considered sufficient. Sir Thomas, however, is very popular in America, and such special luck is supposed to attach to the four-leaved Shamrock, that it is not impossible ho may at east be strongly, urged during the next few weeks to try his fortune with a Shamrock the Fourth.
