The typhoon brake over Canton on the fifth inst, when several junks were driven away to a distance of about two miles; and a boat, in which there were seven persons altogether, was upset; three were saved and the real drowned.

A typhoon of a somewhat serious nature swept over the city yesterday afternoon. In the city many matsheds were blown down and carried. away, but so far no reports of perinus accidents have been received. On the river, several sam. pans were sunk, while attenpling to cross the river during the tempest: Steam Inches were brought into use, for the conveyance sengers backwards and forwards to Honam. The river steamer services are paralysed for the time being, only one steamer having arrived, and then immediately taking her depar ture from here.

It is reported that the building will soon be completed and the ist day of the roth moon has been selected as the day on which the opening ceremony will be. performed.

MEETING AT CANTON COMMERCIAL, CHAMBER.
As the case in which the bankers' st Canton sued the master af Tsi Loong, preserved ginger manufacturers, for the recovery of a large sum of money has not yet been settled, a meeting will be convened at the General Chamber of Com merca on the 6th day of this moon (zvrd-inst.), by the members of the nine charitable institu- tlons and of the 72 guilds here for the discus sion of the matter.
VILLAGE ROBBERY.

It is reported that 32 bnuses in the Ma Tung village ̧¡n*Nam. Hoi district were ransacked yesterday by a band of over tog robbers and a large quantity of booty was carried away. A member of the gentry of that place, named Cheung Kwai, reported the matter 10 the District Magistrate.
INCREASING ROYALTY,
The opening of the Los Shiu Theatre in the western city of Canton, has proved very suc- cessful, so that jealousy has been aroused. certain merchant has Tent to the authorities a petition offering a royalty of $23,000, being $10,000 more than that paid by the present master, if, he is allowed, to be the liceoene of the theatre.

The tennis match between Y.M.C.A. and the Club took place on 16th June and resulted in a win for the Club, which scored 77 games against their opponents' 67. It is to be hoped that this will be an annual function.

FOREIGN PROPERTY.", Some months ago Viceroy Shum notified the various prefects in the two Kwang provinces that they must furnish lists of the property held by missionaries and others in every profecture with the exception of Yung Chow the missionaries own land and houses and it is ibe decreed that a list of these should be compiled for reference.
The Provincial Treasurer at Canton has in- formed Mr. Li Cheung Shun, the chief magis- trate of Yung Chow, that should any foreigner request him to' transfer title deeds of land, houses, or rice-fields he should in the first in stance find out carefully whether the buyer is a missionary or otherwise as by treaty right only the former is allowed to own land outside foreign settlements. Yung, Chow is not a settlement and therefore foreigners cannot own property there.
