We very much regret to have to add to our among this fortnightly freight notes the record of a tere rible disaster which bas befallen the shipping af Hongkong and the, Colony generally on the morning of the 18th instant With hurdly any warming, in fact almost before the echoes of the typhoon gun bad died away, the wind had reached almost cyclonic force and had long- kong and its fine harbour with its extensive shipping in its deaths grip. The absolute un preparedness for anything like such emergency on the part of steamers, lighters, launches, native cargo boats, junks, etc. accounts for a list of damage wrought within the space of only about two hours, ending about 1a.m., that in almost, as pitiful as is the enormous, loss of life. estimated at several thousand, as this dire visitation bas occasioned. The "China Mail" states that figures show that there were about 4,000 craft of all description in the harbour when the typhoon occurred, and from what the Police and Harbour Authorities have learned it is considered cerain that half of that number are either sunk or very badly damaged.....

Following list shows vessels sunk and dam. aged (subject to correction):
