A LIGHT SENTENCE.
According to a Washington message to the Azaki, the Japanese seal-poachers charged at Valdes with poaching at the Teutian Islands, have been sentenced to three months' imprison
ment.
It is believed that this light sentence has been passed –says the dispatch-owing to the desire of the United States to avoid com. plications with the Japanese Government.

A motorman named 1.1 Un, employed by the Electric Tramway Company,, and driver of car No. 26, got off lightly at the Police Court this murning, and be has in thank his stars that he was not in some Western State of America, when he drove his car against the ricksha of the Chilian Consal, throwing that gentleman out and doing serious damage to him, for his car would have been demolished and the chances are that Li Un would be a patient for hospital, However, this is not the country where lynching can be put into effect, so Li got off with a nominal-the Ordinance calls it the maximum-fine.

ACCORDING to the Japan Chronicle, Messrs. Meier & Co. of Chemulpo, have establ shed a regular fortnightly service of steamers between Shanghai, Chefeo and Tairen, and between Chemulpo and Nagasaki, Futan, Geusan and Vladivostok.. Three steamers are at present engaged in the service, and the first-the Nor wegian steamer fason-arrived at Tairen on Sunday morning, leaving for Chefon the same das. This is the first füreign steamer to visit Tairen since the Japanese occupation of the port.
