SINGAPORE COMMERCIAL

SENSATION.

THE HOGAN, CASE.

The following report is from the Singapore Fris Press of 6th inst. ———-

Yesterday afternoon" Mr. Sproute continued the examination-in-chief of Mr. O. F. Odell, liquidator of Hogan & Co.

Messro, Batienberg and Elliott were again

prezent on behalf of the defendants.

Mr. Udell said that on page 149 of the Led- 'gar for 1934-5 the account unfinished work" showed a balance of $23,800,16. This includ ed $6,500 for the Batu Gajab Tin Co. At the end of June 190g the whole of their sum was written off and any amounts then standing for unfinished work were brought into account "P." On Jan. 1, $13,800.16 the total of sche dule "p" was written off. A new sum of $5,800 was carried forward as balance of un- finished work. In the balance sheet for Dec. 31, 1904, the item plant $78,709.04 included $17,000 "Value of unfinished work,' $23,800.16, included the $6,800.16. Invested loan was $35,432.89. This was made up from the ledger. The first item was the l'erseverance Estate ac.

count, being money invested in the estate by Hogan & Co.-$5,759.43. On page 193 of the ledger the Batu Gajah Tin Co. shares had been put as bought by llogan & Cu-$2,000. Fatented machinery was $12,500. The total made $15945. On paga zio there was no account for employees loan. This was entered as $10,000. The total investments came to $43,295.45. From this under loan account $17,836.54 was deducted. This gave the amount of the balance sheet $25,432.89 "Employees loans" meant $10,000 worth of shares had been gives the employees. The employees were debited for this in the books. The item cash borrowed should have appeared in the credit sile of the book. This had been deducted from both sides of the ledger but it was roughly stated.. In the journal and ledger St2,50 was put down as the value of patented machinery. The sum of $5,250 was put down in the trade account and was in turn transferred in the balance of "Profit and loss account," this was $123.283.61. In the published ba lance sheet the total to the credit of Profit and Loss account was $177,818.09. The difference between the two as $421 55, which is an ium of lock written back in the ledge. The "gen eral charges" was money expended 'in pro. ducing the patented machinery and wages spent in making. The S52.40 went under the heading of trade profit. The $53.50 was an anticipated profit. There was no verification check against these items in the journal,-he meant an auditor's check. Anticipated profits

were reprehensible.

he

The patented machines had never been said. "This was a nigst important point," said wit ness, and he wanted it recorded." The item $3,736.45 was the balance in the Hongkong Bank on Dec. 3h 1904. In the debit gide amongst the receipts was an entry "to loan ac count $3,cco" This was also dated Dec. 31. On page 6a in the same book dated Jan. 4among payments was an entry "Paid loan $3,000. This was the first payment in 1905, and the other was the last receipt in 1904. The seer nd payment in rgo; was an entry "Paid Howatth Erskine, Ltd., $2.000."; In the rough cash book' was the entry, loan account received $3,000, fle produced the paying-in-slip to the Bang kong Bank. This was for $3,000. It tallied with the counterfoil of Hogan and Co.'s paying- in book. He also produced the cheque by Hogan and Co. paying the $3,000. counterfoil was marked repayment of 33,000 loay. The writing on the cheque and coun terfoil was Mr Roberson's. The endorsements were Hood Chang, who was cashier and collec tor of Hogan & Co. Under this name were the The letters K. F. were a Cherty's letters K. P. writing. Respecting the cheque to Пowaith Erskine, he produced the paid cheque. The writing in the body of it was Mr. Robertson's. It was dated Jan. 3rd 1953. On the counterfoil were the letters and figures" H. F. $1,001. The cheque was dated by the Bank Dec. 31, 1904- This was the date the Bank cashed it. In sed jak were the words "paid as'on Jan. 3rd 1905." This meant the cheque was post dated. In the pass hook. for 1994 the paying-in to the Bank of $3,000 in December was shown. Jan. 3. 1925, was the entry for the $1,000 paid out.

The balance in the pass book on Jan. 1st 1935 was $3736-45., in the diary for 1994 on Dec, 31st 1974 was the entry in Mr. Robertson's handwriting, "Loan Account $2,000 credit repaid on Jan. 3rd 1905." In the 1905 Diary on Jan. 3rd was the entry, "Lean Account $3,000 repait" and in brackets the word "cheque."

By Mr. Battenberg: He was requested to investigate Hogan & Co's affairs in July 1905 by Mr. Dows. Witness next referred to Father Couvreur, Mr. Down said he was dissatisfied

with the state of affairs of Hogan & Co. and wanted an independent opinion, Mr. Dawn did not mention that he wished to prosecute Hogan. Mr. Smellie joined the firm on the departure of Mr. Robertson. Mr. Smellic, he thought, was present at the meeting on July 8, but he was not quite sure of this, Mr. Smellie gave

him no assistance whatever in the investigation. He sent in a written report to his firm, but did not remember stating that Mr. Smellie bad been of great assistance tohim. He had audited the Tanjong Pagar secounts jointly with Der. rick and Co. Previous to this he had had a good deal of experience in auditing the accounts of engineer-firms. Regarding the marking of the books with one tick he had never seen auditors use this. There might be fancy methods though. He knew who nudited the books. Ho had not inquired what the marks meant. He

could not say how long he had taken to make his investigation. (Counsel : You must tell me.
