THE THAMES MYSTERY SHIP
A SEVEN MONTHS' CRUISE.
"Where lies the land to which you ship must Es?" Despite the varied theories which have been put forward in regard to the destination „of.the.ircusura:seeking steamer Kema, the fact remains that the geographical position of the beach where her treasure is to be gathered has not yet been disclosed. The idea that she was bound away to seek the Bonito or Mary Dim millions which are supposed to be secreted on Cocos Island, off the Pacific coast of Central America, was at first blush quite reasonable, that is, until one came carefully to examine the terms of the voyage as set forth in the ship's articles:
From London to St. Helena, via Cardia, and
to any port or places within the limits of 60 N. latitude and 40 S. latitude.
This is the sentence employed to describe the limitations of the ship's voyage, If, as bas been biated, she were going to Cocos Island she would pass through the - Magellan Straits. ut. this tortuous channel is in sideg.S considerably more to the southward than tha latitude mentioned in the articles. It would, of course, be possible to make the passage to Cocos Island "east-about," and thus not depart .from the limits set forth in the articles, although All Claims agains: the Steamer must be pre- to do so would mean a terribly long voyage All Claims against the Steamer must be presented to the Undersigned on or before the 1st round the Cape of Good Hope, through the sented to the Undersigned on or before the

Again, abe is expected back from bertreasure. seeking venture is, about six or seven months time, and this is hardly a sufficiently long period forlierto make the complete round to "Treasure Island," as Coces is now frequently called, [887 unless she made hut a brief stay at the island, Another theory is that she goes to seek diamonds on an island which is marked on the Admiralty chart, and which is situated off the coast of East Africa. is correct, but the venue of the wealthy [spot in not off the East Afilcan coast.
The origin of the venture may be outlined in a few sentences. Not very long ago a ship was wrecked in a position which is admitted to be eastward of the Dark Continent, and from this wreck one seafarer escaped with his life. He was ultimately brought back to civilisation, and he had carried away some dingy-looking.

These, upon examination, proved to be diamonds, and it is with the object of proceed ing to this place that the present venture has been organized by a syndicate known as the Collis Diamond Syndicate. That shipwrecked mariner will accompany the expedition, sharing in its fortunes. The most telling reason for secrecy in the adventure lies in the fact that the Xema is an old thirty-four-year steamer of no great engine power. She cannot be ex- pected to make a great speed at sea, and were the locality to which she is bound disclosed there would appear to be nothing to prevent a rival expedition being despatched in hasto in swift steamer, which might be off the diamond strewe beach before the ancient Tems, had doubled the Cape of Good Hope. Bot, a master of fact, the members che
