The general trend of the price Messrs. EWENS, HARSTON & HARDING, of silver was downward until 1902, when it reached the lowes known price; about 22-1/4 d. per ounce.

It was obviously impossible to continue the 'free ass of silver as a standard of value for the one essential feature of a standard is its inva- riability. A yard stick of varying length is no
