Captain Ellis was the Commodore of the "E, and A." fleet and at the time of his death was in command of the
steamer Eastern of that company. Fe was well known' to a large number of the shipping community during his command of the Eastern Australian, Empire, Airlic, Menmuir and other vessels of the company's fleet.
