The remarkable expansion of currency has head one of the effects of the ar. In May 1904, Bir-in your issue of to-day I read, with

250 million yen of money in circulation, which greatly exceeds the amount in circulation ifone the war. It is, however, doubtful whether the specie reserve at present of 140 TO 159. million will be maintained in the ture, When Pyments abroad begin to Le made out of the Treasury, with the xhaustion of the money now kept abroad Just needs be driwn

That the Special Resolution being the Fourth in Number passed and confirmed at Extraordinary General Meetings of this Company held on the 3rd and 2oth days of June, 1905, respectively, together with all Agreements entered into there: ander and particularly the Agreement of in writing bearing date the 18th day October, 1905, made between this Company and its Liquidators (John D. Humphreys & Son) of the one part and the Peak Tramways Company, Limited, of the other part be and the same aro herchy rescinded.
J. may ay from experience that the firm has always been run on the most straight- forward lines, au furs the staff is concerned, and every herve of individual menibers is strained to secure any business in the market, which is proved, as they secure at least ga per cent of the work estimated for. The who are successful in securing the remaining to per cent of the trade are welcome to it and the profit, if any, gained.
*
Another point which we might put a shade on is regarding the form opposition fems." ! have a pretty air idea of the cost of labour and material and what profit is required to make 20 per cent and slap know that the "opposition Arms" mentioned pay from 15 to 40 per cent more for labour than S. C. F. B. & Co đẹ. H they do the work for 25 per cent less how can they still make 20 per cent in the face of these facts? I am sure no shipping firms could reconcile these figures. Perhaps Mr. Potis can figure it out,
It would be impossible to have a man with more experience tact and ability than our worthy Chairman, and am sure the stendy that fact. Thanking you for the favour of investors in our Company are well aware of publishing this, I am, etc.,
2. That the Draft Agreement rubmitted to this Meeting and expressed to be made between this Company and its Liquida Fenk tors of the one part and the Tramways Company, Limited," of the other part, be and the same is hereby approved and that the said Liquidators be and they are hereby authorised pursuant 10 Sections as and zoz of the Com-To panies Ordinance 1865 to enter into an Agreement with the said "Peak Tram- ways Company, Limited," in the terms of the said Draft and to carry the same into effect with such (if any) modifica sion as they may think expedient. Where one finds an old institution with every advantage of property, position and (it should be) connection, going to the wall while new competitors spring up alongside of it and prosper, only one conclusion can be drawn by sensible people.
The management must be lamentably at fault, and that is really what has to be tackled, if this concere, which possesses such valuable assets in property, is to be vitalised.

Sit-The Dock meeting yosterday, although largely attended, can scarcely be considered a satisfactory one; the majority of the sharehold ers had evidently come in the hope that some explanation of the poor results of the year's working would be forthcoming, but the Chair. man's speech was disappointing, being princip ally a repetition of the printed Report, a few platitudes about bad times and a reference to the dividends paid in the past; if surmises are correct, the latter were noi actually earned.
As will be seen from the report of the meet- ing, the Chairman admitted that nothing had been written off for depreciation from plant and stock since the formation of the Company five years before. It was, almost an insult to the business men present to ask them to believe that boilers, for instance, although kept in order, could be worth year after year the same amourt, to say nothing of the rest of the There was a general feeling that machinery. it was useless to heckle the Board, two or three recent changes had, been made in its composition, and the new men could not be Affairs; in addi- position of tion to this, personal friendship prevents acrimonious remarks in Shanghai, and the Re- port and accounts were as usual passed. a more successful one, and conducte will be
on proper
business principles. Theold Company's reports give little or no information; the assets of 1905 were, in most of the items, identical with those of
1991; everything, including directors' fee', interest, etc, which should be shown in the
Profit and Loss accounts, were smothered up in certiorking Accounts, and the Auditors' were, to all intents and purposes, corticate quite useless.
It has been suggested that the Company's property is too scattered and unmanageable for proper supervision, and that concentration at one spot would be better, after some of the unproductive land has been disposed of. But the outsider cannot be the proper Judge in such matters. One thing is quite certain, that at the next i meting of the new Company a year hence, shareholders will expect, and I trust insist, that a more business-like statement of Company's assets and liabilities be present ed, and that depreciation be fully provided for, and shown in the accounts, even at the expense of there being no dividend.
