M8 ROBERT LAW DROWNED.

Very great regret was experienced in Shang. hai when yesterday afternoon it became known that Mr. Robert Law of the Shanghai and Hongkew Wharf Co., Ld., had been drowned through the capsizing of his boat during the ib violent storm that visited the Settlements the morning.

It appears that Mr. Law, is company with the Rev. D. McGillivray, had taken their families to Mokaoshan and, returning to

Shanghai encountered the full force of the squall when near the Kiangoan Arsenal Dock. The boat, which was an ordinary houseboat, was attached to a stent launch. When struck by the squail, the housebo ̧t, with- out a moment's warning, turned sure. Ac cording to the evidence of one of the Chinesa servants Mr. MacGillivray was in an inter compartment at the time, whilst Mr. Law was standing at the doorway. Mr. Law tried to

estape through this door to the front of the boat, and winle so doing was washed 'over board. He was seen by the Chinese servant to rise once. Just as the storm broke the U. 5. Quiron was, leaving the Kiangnan 'Arstial Dock, but she herself, by reason of the storm was in

of

in a critical condition and was therefnte unable to render immediate assistance, it was scan from her deçk that a boat had been cap. sized. The foreigners in the Arsenal were also unable to help at once, as the buildings were being damaged by the storm, and in addition they were unable to get a very clear view what was happening. About twenty minutes elapsed before it was definitely known that foreigners had been on the capsized boat. Mr. Young, the dock master, and others at the Dock rendered valuable insistance in the emergency. Captain Train, the son of Admir al Train, with his men proceeded to the capsiz ed boat; and with axes broke open the bottom, rescuing Mr. MacGillivray, who was badly wounded in the bed He had been imprison- ed in the bat for nearly half-an-hour. He was conveyed on board the Quitor, his wounds

being

attended to by Mr. Fatter. The Rev. C." E. Darwent, of whose church Mr. 1aw was a prominent meinber, accompanied by the Rev. E. Box, of the London Mission, proceeded in company with Inspector Mellows in the scene of the nccident in a steam launch kindly placed at their disposal by Mr Carbon. We learn that the body of Mr. La has since been ze covered. Universal sympathy is expressed fui Mrs. Law and the other members of the Lautly
