TO THE NORTH POLE BY AIRSHIP.

MR. WELLMAN'S DARING PROJECT, 20

Paris, June 4. A special correspondent of Reuter's Agency, who came here for the purpose of ascertaining the progress which is being made in Mr. Well- man's sensational project of reaching the North "ole by means of a specially constructed air- ship, has had an opportunity-the first afforded to anyone except those engaged in its construc. tion-ot inspecting the extraordinary m chine, which is almost completed, at the Godard works at St. Quen,

The greatest secrecy has been observed with regard to the admission of strangers to the shops and slips where the "America" (by which name the ship will be called) lies, but its dimensions and construction are for in advance of anything yet known in aeronautics. As seen on the slips, the "America" looks more like a vessel intended to navigate the sea than the frail construction which is popularly associated with an airship,

A 1,200 MILES JOURNEY,' This will be the more readily understood when it is stated that the explorers' aim is to make a voyaga from the expeditionary base in Spitzbergen of 1,200 miles-viz, to the North Pola and back-at an estimated speed of 12 iniles an hour, or a total return voyage of 100 hours. This calculation is based on what is technically known as the "proper" speed of the vessel, and does not take into account the in- Aluence of winds,

Unlike any previous, airship, the "America' will carry 5,500lb. of petrol sufficient fuel for a voyage of 1,800 miles, the calculations bring again based on the prevalence of calm.

The Lotal length of the car of the airship, which is constructed of wood strengthened by steel, is (2) feet, while its width is six feet.

DRIVEN BY TWO, MOTORS.

The motor power of the airship consists of two motors, one of 55, the other of as horse. power. The firs: will drive the forward screw,' which is 18"feel"in diameter;-280-turas_per_ mninute, while the latter, drives the rear screw (ral feet in diameter) 350 turns- per minute. Either may be worked alone, or both together, The larger one is calculated to give a speed of 12 miles per hour, and both together 18 miles per hour.

The total crew of the airship will be five men, of whom three will always be on duty. One of these will be stationed on the navigating deck, where he works the rudder and watches the

instruments, one in the engine-room, and the third will be on duty in the basket below the car, occupied in working the windlass, which operates the drag anchor and the guide rope. is is not calculated that any of the crew will be able to get more than three or four hours' sleep per day,

The plan is that the airship shall not rise to a greater average height than 400 10 500 feet. The airship party will consist of Mr. Wellman, who will have with him Major H. D. Hersey, who represents the United States Governmen

and the National Geographical Society, oft Washington, as scientific observer and navigator; M. Gaston Hervien, the well-known aeronaut; Mr. M. Į, Smith, the wireless Telegraph expert; and M. Paul Cofardeau, who will be in charge of the motors.

A TRIAL TRIF,

The airship will leave Paris in a few do's, Bills of Lading will be countersigned by the accompanied by Mr. Wellman, M. Hervieu M. Undersigned...
