THE CONTROL OF GRISHA.

A correspondent writes to the fafan Chro nics: Various Societies and Associations have of late come into existence, reforms and im provements are being introduced in social, industrial, and benevolent directions, and it is gratifying to observe that some of them are gradually bearing fruit. There is, however, one mier of a very important character which is overlooked, whether unconsciously or know. ingly I cannot tell. I refer to the stricter and

Lady's and Gent's GOLD DIAMOND RINGS, PINS and English proper control of what are called "geisba.”

It is a question if gaisha are really necessary for the entertainment of Society at large. If so, I would ask why? If really requisite for helping enjoyment, let them be under strict control. As it is io-day there is almost no difference between them and the unfortunate women who are under stricter control, confined In a stipulated locality, with regular medical examination, thereby guarding against the undesirable custom spreading, among decent

Geisha, while exempt from such strict medic al and mural control, are allowed to go free of that special tax that is imposed upon more un- fortunate public women. I recollect a strenuous noremment once started somewhere in or Dear Nagoya for the abolition of public wo reen. The geisha, while offering the same facility to men, are free from both examination and tax. Besides, by their being allowed to THE NEW FRENCH réside with decent people, their lazy and im moral customs and manners are in danger of being copied, especially by the lower classes, landing to the desire of poor patents to obtain money and comfortable living by educating their girls to lead the same life. This is per haps the most serious effect the tax control of geisha has on Society.
