180

The present Estirate provides for an allowance of $672 for the Clerk and

Messenger of the Crown Solicitor.

The Secretary of State's sanction having been asked for an increase of $720 to the Salary of Mr. STEWART, provision is therefore made in the Estimate of 1872. It is also proposed to increase the allowances of the department! for Chinese Teachers and Contingencies by $762.

The Estimate provides for an allowance of $480 to the Health Officer for

Boatmen, and for an increased expenditure of $400 at the Lock Hospital.

An increase of $720 to the Salary of the Coroner having been recommended to the Secretary of State, increased provision is consequently made in the Estimate. batera, not lleved

This increase is caused by the probable expenditure of $11,000 for the passages

of 40 Europeans, and by an increase of the Chinese Force.

The Council having sanctioned an increase of the Salaries of Turnkeys in 1871,

the Estimate of 1872 also provides for similar payments.

The Salaries of the two Engine Drivers and two Foremen having been increased

by $2 each per month, provision is accordingly made in the Estimate.

The Pok-fo-lum Reservoir and the Court House having been completed, the

Estimate of 1872 is naturally reduced. New Haris M.

The proposed Bridges at Bowrington and Tytam have necessitated the

crease in the Estimate of 1872 over the preceding year..
