According to the telegram which we received yesterday after noon, the attack on the two Europeans was entirely unprovoked and that only confirms the first view we took of the occurrence. It is a well-known fact that the rivers in the vicinity of the coast ports are infested by pirates and blackguards of every description who prey on the law-abiding section of the community. Most of these gangs are led by outlaws who, having rendered themselves amenable to law for other crimes, have be taken themselves to the fringes of civilisation there to levy perpetual toll on hapless husbandmen and terror-stricken travellers The gangs are composed of men who prefer

A coolie named Wong Shia Hing, reading, at No. 7, Square Street, was charged at the Magistracy, yesterday, with stealing $300, from a hawker on 5th June, The accused denied the charge. It appears that on the 5th instant the complainant mvited defendant to lea at a restaurant in Queen's Road Central When they were finished the complainant producad his purse which contained $joo, in Sico bills, removed the notes, and paid the waiter the price of the tea. Defend. ant was suitably replied, and he asked com. plainant why he did not change the money into subsidiary coins as he would get $30 extra as- premiuin. The end of the matter was that complainant handed the $300 to defendant to go to change for him while he waited his return in the restaurant. The defendant went, bat did not return.
