AT about 6.30 o'clock yesterday morning, an accident occurred in a house at No. 3. Wing Shing Street, and as a result a Chinese girl, about eight years of age, died some hours later. Although the accident occurred early in the morning, the police were not notified until last night, after the child had died. According t the story told the police by the mother of the childre, it is related that, at the time mention- ed, heralder daughter and the other child were in the kitchen. The elder was pouring out boiling water from an earthenware pot into a basin for the younger one to wash its face. The handle of the pot was hot and as she could bear the heat no longer she dropped the pot of boiling water and scalded her sister. Instead of informing the police authenties' of the occurrence and seeing that the unfortunate child was removed to the hospital, the old
The woman summoned a Chinese doctor. child died the same afternoon,
THE other day a Chinaman reported to have been killed in a house at Talai P, Bangkok, as the result of a duct with another Chinaman. The story came to the Bangkak Times through A trustworthy man living in that district and, though these tales are hard to verify, is pro- bably true. The method they adopted in fight. ing it not familiar to most "larangs," and may therefore be of some interest. They fought with the two forefingers of each hand, stabbing eaca aber with these in the region of the spleen and at the same level on the other side of the body. A strongly built coolic using the weight of his body could certainly give a pasty blow is that part of the body, even with two fingen, and repeated blows of the kind are said pinally to prove fatal. The men who go in for his kind of contest practise every morn ing stabbing bags of rice or paddy with these fingen till they can use them like a piece ol iron. When a man gets a good blow in, he can supelimos cruck its fingers so that in WELLN drawing he pulls 'a rib outward till it breaks.
ABOUT two hundred Chinmen, natives ol Amoy Pakhoi and Swatow, who were alleged to have been "kidnapped" and bruught to Honglong for the purposes of emigration- the particulars of which is reported in another cojumn-crowded the compound outside the ebarge room of the Cemral Police Station, on Friday. As the supposed leader of the 'kid-' mapping" gang is under arrest, these men are being examined by the police and the Registrar Gental, after which they will be returned to
their homes. We understand that the majority of these men are unemployed and some are farmas in the coast ports. A party of men, who live by kidnapping, send scouts into the coun try and tell the men that if they come to flong- kong work will be obtained for them at the rale of is per month. When they arrive in the Colony they are either sent to the Straits Set- tlements, or sold. In this instance, we are in- formed that nearly all the boarding-houses in the Colony were fall, and hearing of this and from information received, the police-made the arred and rescued the men.
A TREMENDOUS noise, followed by some ex. citement, was occasioned in Wellington Street- on Thursday afternoon, when a Chinainan came bounding down a staircase and rolled on to the sidewalk. He was picked up and it was as ceruined that he had broken his left hand in rolling down the staircase, ile was sent to hos- pital and his assailant arrested. On Friday, at the Magistracy, a Chinaman was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to the com- plainant. The complainant is a tailor keeping a shop at No. 55, Wellington Street. The defend and was his feti. Yesterday afternoon, it was stated, defendant asked complainant for a loan of tome money. Complainant refused, saying that defendant was given two coats to repair a few days ago and up to yesterday the garments was not ready for delivery. This caused a a scuffle ensued, in which defend quarrel, and
na was alleged to have picked complainant up and threw him down the stairs, causing the damage already mentioned. At this stage, a letter was received by his Worship from solicitor, who was interested in the case, asking for postponement. His Worship remanded the case until the 17th jostant., Bail $150.
Attunemployed Indian watchman has of late given the Police at West Point some trouble, and notwithstanding the many chances that wit given him be paid no heed, consequently Inspector Collett settled it this morning. This Indian was formerly employed as watchman to a firm at No. 28, Salt Fish Lane. He was recently discharged. Since he was dismissed the watchman has been wont to return to the shop, after they had closed for the night, and bug the door and demand an explanation as to why he was discharged. The police were called by the shopkeeper on two different occa alons, but he refused to prosecute. Last night,
the indian, taking advantage of the shop keeper, returned and raised another row. This time the Indian was arrested, but still the shopkeeper intimated that it was nos his desire 10 prosecute.
