WIZARDS UP THE WORLD.

CONJURERS MYSTIFY AN EXPERT AUDIENCE.

St. George's Hall was the scene of an un- precedented entertainment, an entertainment. of wizards by wizards. "

The Magic Circle," which is a club can- sisting of all the leading professional and amateur conjurers in London, gave its first "seance," and hali a dozen of the leading wizards of the world performed some of their latest and most wonderful tricks,

The audience was composed of two or thres hundred of the cleverest amateur conjurers, and such 'well-known professional members of the "Circle" as Messrs. Maskelyne and Devant. The peculiar interest in the proceedings was that the wizards on the stage attempted to mystify the wizards in the auditorium, and in most instances they succeeded in the difficult task.

From the moment when Mr. Herbert J. Collins began the sleight of hand "business" until Mr. Nate Leipsic, the greatest of modern card palmers, concluded it, the "Circle" of wizards sat watching with the lynx eyes, trying with experienced minds to fathom the tricks with which their wizardy friends were endea vouring to mystify them.

MASTERLY FEATS.

Needless to say, the wizards on the stage never received heartier applause than they received from their fellow-conjurers, who ap preciated many masterly feats of wizardry which the ordinary audience would have been unable to fully comprehend.

Mr. Collins' agreeable opening was to take a large white handkerchief, extract a red one' from a lady's programme, wrap it in the white one, and then shake the white one out, when the red handkerchief was, of course, lavisible, while the white one had four red diamonds i dotted in its four quarters.

After making billiard balls appear from nowhere in an empty egg-cup standing on a table, Mr. C. O. Williams placed an empty. glass bowl on a table and shook his hand over i it, when the bowl immediately appeared full of exquisite flowers. Not a wizard in the audience had seen them came into the bowl, and Mr. Williams was warmly applauded.

What Joad Hoteb cannot do in the way of Egyptian wizardry is scarcely worth doing. Ho Swallowed flaming paper and emitted ropes of paper "pearls" from his mouth. Then, with his hands tied together, he caught hoops thrown to him-that is to say, caught them, on one arm, although both were visibly tied together,

Mr. Maskelyne was loudly cheered for a wonderful exhibition of "plate-spinning." He took an ordinary plate, and with his hand made it dance round a table, spinning all the while. He gradually increased the number of plates, until he had four all dancing and then be added a large washing basin, and kept all dancing together.

NEW EXPERIMENTS.

Mr. Devant gave two entirely new experi ments, the most extraordinary of which was "Diogenes and his tub." He took an empty tub with hollow ends, and fastened them up with large sheets of white paper. Then he struck the tub with his wand, and out, through the paper at one cod burat Diogenes, an ancient Greek in the costume and whiskers of the period. The best part of the trick was that it deceived the entire wizard audience, for no one saw Diogenes get inside the tub, which was never taken off the centre of the stage.

But Mr. Devant's most.comical effort was to borrow a watch, put it in a bag, and then extract it from an old gentleman's wais coat, tied with ribbon round the neck of a guinea pig. The cleverest performance came when Mr. Nata Leipsic took the stage. Mr. Leipsic is a young American who has already saken the West End by storm, and is quite the rage at Society entertainmeals. He is said by his brother wizards to be farland away the clever. est card manipulator in either hemisphere, and his wizardry last night justified his reputation, He showed half a dozen amazing tricks.

First, he held his fingers out in the limelight, and little red thimbles appeared on the ends of one or another or all of them, and disap peared with equal mystery. The assembled wizards 'shouted their admiration of the "trick."

CARD "MIRACLE.'

Then he put the ordinary card-changing trick completely in the shade" by changing the top-card of a pack merely by passing the He had a committee palm of his hand over it. of expert wizards standing on the stage all round him, and not one of them could see how he deceived them. Then, holding a card out. in, full view of the audience he wetted his finger and rubbed one of the spots on it. The spot disappeared, and the "five" became a "four."

Then he got four wizards to take the four aces out of the pack, and replace them where. they liked. He had merely to smack the pack smartly with his open hand-with the four wizards watching closely-and ace after aca appeared on top of it..

More mysterious still was his ability to tell a card which, some one had chosen. Some ene looked at a card and replaced it in the pack. Then the same person counted the pack out into Mr. Leipsic's hand, and stopped at any card he-the counter-chose. But it always happened that he stopped at his chosen 1Q card without knowing it."

A FRESH CONSIGNMENT OF NGLO-SWISS CONDENSED MILK

(Milkmaid Brand).. Guaranteed to be fresh and wholesome, Exceptionally low prices for retail and whole. sale buyers.

Per Dozen tins $1.50. Per Case of 4 dozen tias $9.50,

Finally, Mr. Leipsic put a coin on the back of his band. The coin at once began 'rolling over and over, on its side, round each finger, and so on round his whole hand, and front. He par a table-knife on some one's hand, and by merely placing his open hand upon it lifted it up. He spread a pack of cards on bis palm, and turned his hand over. The cards remained against his palms, and he walked down to let the audience see there was no deception."

Taking it altogether, there has probably never been such a remarkable exhibition of [64 | wizardry before such an audience of wizards,

H. RUTTONSEE, Hongkong and Kowloon, Hongkong, 15th May, 1905,
