A FAIR EXCHANGE.

MAY 17, 1906.

Large sums of money are no doubt realized Those who are interested in rifle shooting from simple speculation, but the greas fortunes will remember that off and on during there derived from legitimate and honest business past ten years or more we, the Singapore Free Press, frequently advacated the ap plication of a sliding wind gauge to the hind sight of the service rifle. Even the Martini- Henry as supplied to the Navy had such an at inchment, although that was never applied in the Army Rifle. The old anval slide might rather be termed a speed gauge than a wind 'guage, as the corrections for deflection which it would enable to be put on would be rather used in the case of rapidly moving targets such as a hostile torpedo boat approaching, than merely for wind. The years went on, and it is only on the new short service rifle that a traversing back-sight for wind correction has been at

n

last introduced by the War Office authorities.

Up till now nothing had been done to supply the long rifle, the Lee Metford or the Lee En

held 353, with this most necessary and valuable

appliance, in spite of the fact that it is to that barrel, the finest army rifle barrel that could be desired, that such an appliance could be most usefully attached. Consequently we, the Singa pore Free Press, are particularly glad to read The following in a mail paper just to hand:--

The Council of the National Rifle Associa. tion has received official information that slide containing a movable piece for use as a wind-gauge and fitted with scale, has been fficially adapted by the War Office for use with the Lee Melford and Lee Enfield (long) It will take the place of the match slide d:. hitherto allowed officially for use in match shooting, but the match slide can still be used

From the above it will follow that the Secre- tary of the Hongkong Rifle Association, as the Central Secretary of the annual match, huld telegraph for parcels of the new stide to be ad- dressed to Hongkong, Shanghai, and Singapore for practice purposes in anticipation of the an nual match. It will come, same day, as an appurtenance for manoeuvre and field-service, to be entrusted in the haods of thirty to forly men per infantry battalion.

MORTALITY AMONG MEN.

MAN'S CHANCES OF LIFE MUCH LESS THAN WOMAN'S

Judging from the figures given by the Re gistrar-General, whose report has already been i Tefened to in The Morning Leader (London), the female portion of aur population can con gratulate itself on having much better chances of life than the male. It is a curious fact that 17,255 inore males than females were born in the year 1904. But 16,628 more males than females died during the year, so that, roughly speaking, the status quo of the sexes was pie served.

The Registrar-General shows how much greater is the wastage among the males than among the females. Thus, the first five years of life, he says, are much more destructive to boys than 10, girls.

In the succeeding ten years, it is true-i.e. between the age of five and fifteen-the female hortality equals or even exceeds the male.. But after the age of 15 "men die much faster than women."

IN URBAN AND RURAL AREAS.

It appears that this superior vitality of the wea' er sex holds. good bath in urban and in rural areas,

If we take last year's figures we find that the death-rate of males was 17.3, and that of females 15.2 per 1,000 living vf each sex respectively. But of equal numbers estimated to be living in 1904 there were 30 deaths of males to 1,000 deaths of females. Looking as

stands in the front rank in the march of medi cinc. It is a scientific remedy and a food, with a delicious Laste and flavour. No slow or doubtful action. "It cannot disappoint you.” Sold by all chemists.
