WOMEN AND MARKIAGE IN EGYPT.

According to the Cairo enreeapondent of the Globe. A number of molive women of Expt have just preferred a petition to the Govern ment, imploring protection from the unjust +marriage laws of the country. "When 'any of us," they declare, "have differences with our husbands over questions concerning our welfare, they abandon us, and compel us to 'institute proceedings in the Mehkemeh Sharich, the supreme Mohammedan tribunat, for main. tenance." But this court is circumlocutory, and when at Inst the needy wife secures, a judgment, and hopes thereupon to obtain a "nafaka" from the Governor that" document, when finally granted after countless delays, is too, often" valueless, the husband pleading poverty, and refusing to mppart either his wife or her children. He neither offers to maintain her, nor does he divorce his wife, who according

to the Law of the Prophet, can claim no redress, and notwithstanding the justice of her cause, is forced to live in suffering and misery: The petilinaeru appeal in the Government to redress their grievances,to raise their moral and material status, and in protect their honour, in the

SEWING UP A HEART,

MIRACULA US CUR" BỶ 'A PAR'S SURGEON.

An extraordinary operation has been per formed at Paris recently by Dr. Quenu; of the Cochin Hospital, · A ciri was brought in suffer- ing from a self-indicted stab in the breast. The knife had pierced the heart, and the patient was to all appearnoen dead

Dr. Quent, however, believed he saw signs of life and determined to effect a most delicate operation. Opening the chest above the heart, he examined the wound, and found that the heart was still bleeding.

At the fourth attempt he succeeded in getting

hold of the organ, and in drawing it out, · In

twenty-five, minutes he sewed on the wound with a minute needle and the finest thread. He then stitched the wound in the chest, bandaged it and placed the patient in bed,

She was interviewed at her home by the "Petit Inurnal," and announced this on the previous night she had been to a ball and danced without even losing breath,

In the Andes a curious effect is onted by travellers. There is an inn half-way in the direct route where agrenders and descenders frequently meet, the former hall perished with. increasing cold, the Intter overwhelmed by ins creasing heat.

GREAT cities almást invari-bly grow towards the west. One ex¬lanation of this, so far as Europe is concerned, it that the prevailing winds are from the west and southwest,' sö that these partons of the towns are brighter, cleaner and healthier than the eastern.
