THE ACCE-TED APOSTLE,
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH-MONDAY MAY 7, 1906.
Olearanoes at the Harbour Offioa. And then came the momentous question, ↑ Fiume, for Canton, addressed to all this mighty host: "Do you take me, John Alexander Dowie, to be your apostle?" and they all, with one voice-being thereunto “trained—said, “Yes."!
Rumor said that great excitement had been caused in Zion, because Dowie had given on! that he was going to appoint twelve other apostles, and there had been intense anxiety as to who were to be the proud members of this spiritul hierarchy. But, having been appoint. ed himself, his interest in devolution appeared to wane, and to the surprise of us all, as wa waited for further announcements, the proceed. Ings terminated.

So fall the curtain on the wildest pantomime As we wandered back to the station, we saw many trees bearing notice-beards to this effect: The use of all and tobacco is abaniutely
I gathered that the sight of forbidden,"

by the city police of Zion. Towie is said to be ground landlord of many, if not matt, of the houses; a clause is in every lonse to the effect that if any alcohol or tobacco is found in a house the lease is thereby ipro facto, forfeited. I was alan told that Dowie takes a 10 per cent, income tax foai every inhabitant of Zion. My charming American and wonder if Zion will shake off Dowie as easily.
THE SHIP-BUILDING TRADE:
QUESTION OF OVER-TONNAGE.
In a recent number of the Tokyo Krizai Zasshi appea nu interesting article on Japan- exe ship-building and the question of over- tobhage, by Mr. Shod, Director of the “Mitsu Bishi Goshi Kajska
"The ship-building industry, in which our firm is uost interested," says M. Shoda, "has made remarkable progress in recent years. A few years ago we built the Hitachianaru, 6.com tons, and we are now building at Nagasaki a steamer of over 10,000 tons to the order of the Toyo Kisen Kaisha
The difficulty in counte
tion with ship-building nowadays is the dearth of experts-men who carna be turned out in a day, but require training for many years. In a ship-building yard pamps and engines must be manufactured, though in English yards the sub- division of labour is an thorouch and well. developed that steel plates and siret angles are manuficted in the yards Not much capital. โช
required in the setting-up of this system of division of labour in a ship-building, yard.

At present the whole of the material necessary cannot be obtained from the Govern. ment Iron Foundry at Wakamatsu,' and it must consequently be brought from abroad. I all this material could be obtni ed at home, much benefit would accrue to the Japanese manufacturing indurry. For this reason it is essential that the iron industry should be encouraged. In Japan, unlike England, won and coal canoni le pocured at

At present the Government Iron Foundry receives iron me from China, and in consequence of this, it is the enterprise dnes

Some years ago the invern ment stated a glass factory, at Shinagawa, but, it had to be closed owing to the loss inensed. Some of the experts who were engaged in the glass factory bave since started a factory on their own account, and a e now ranging fỡ n fairly remunerative business. be built and equipped accordingly. That is the reason why ship-building in this country is now enjoying unprecedented prosperity.
