A. to the East thus in middle life it would have been impossible for her either to attain to any mastery over the language or effect much as a missionary, but twenty-two years of strenuous service attest the contrary and for years post Miss Robinson's girls' school at Chinking has been known acune of the best, if not the best girls' school In China. Begun in a very small way on the Dund, tho, by degrees, got more girls together, got money together, and, when I first knew her was already installed in the very suitable school building on the hill, grouped together, with hospital, dispensary, chapel, and boys' school. She wastheneducating her second generation of Chinese girls and wondering if God would permit her, already in fral health, to continue and educate the grand- children of her first pupils. One could always know Mi & Rubinson's poful, all up and down the river, by the friendly expres-ion of their eyes, infused into them by hots. All their interesis wein hais When I Gist stayed with her she had among her pup is several girls. related to landing members of the reform | arty. How Miss Rubinsna, trembled with them for. their relations, how her eyes filled with tears when the news' was bad, how eagerly she sought out every strip of news in the papers -and read it aloud to the assembled girls test by singling out any she should bring them too into danger. She was always well up to date in her methods, if not, indeed a little ahead. There were wall maps she had drawn up for teaching her girls Chinese history, which I remember my husband pron sunced, Ihos? ingenuous and wanted much to see compleied and published. She had constant daily inter course, with thinese, whom she feceived in her little partyas not in a special guest room set apart, thus alin thing her, Chinese friends just like her otherinends in the intimacy of her home circle. Miss Rob nann drew every. one near to her who approached her, and the boyses of her former puyals, who h ́d married Chinese husbands, astonished me by being absolutely clean and tidy, set out with books evidently for use and with a glass of flowers on the table. One had begun tá dress her baby in white after the foreign fashion so as to ensure cleanliness, ill, finding the child was then taken for an Eurasino, she had reveried, to Chinese clothes.
In 1900 she could not herself eséipe from possible Boxers, with at bringing down all her schoolgirls with her, feeling that they had been 'tog much mixed up with ferigaro, tubes irly

It was abfficult enough for foreigners to find prom or Shinghe just then; to find room, for all these Chines' girls was almost impossible. From the first Miss Robinson had been an active anti- footbinder, and it was becruse her girls, walk-❘ ing to chapel firmly on natural feet, en- countered so much ridicule, that she hailed the formation of the Tau Hui, ar Natural Feet Society, with such delight. eager to arrange for meetings at Chinking, and although sufficiently burdened with her own schoolwork, served for some years past as our focal Hon. Secretary, One of her most marked characteristics was her humility, lending her often to entertain no unduly' exalted opinion of others, it was, however, rather her advanced spirituality that made ber letters, as so many have found them, an inspiration. No-one could bear to dis- appoint the high expectations her ardent nature expressed so warmly. Chiakiang seems a much poorer place now she has been taken away, yet for souls like hers Heaven is the fit abiding place.---N, C, D. News.
