OUR NAVY IN WAR.

REALISTIC MANŒUVRES TO PROTECT

COMMERCK.

164

The naval manauvres in Jane, instead of be ing confined to the area from the Scilly Isles- to Gibraltar (as was at first understand), will be of a much larger chracter.

On a given day, and hour, just previous to the commencement of the maneuvres, the signal, Britain has been suddenly plunged into war will be Rashed to the British fleets all over the world; and measures will immediately be taken in protect our commerce by the differenì British squadrons.

Whenever a merchantman is sighted she will forthwith be taken, under the protection of a warship.

and escorted in a given rendezvous in

the vicinity

When a sufficiently large number of mer chantmen have been gathered togetherthey will set out for their destinations again, escorted by arquadron of warships.

While these evolutions are going on the "enemy" will be attempting to cut off the steamers and inake prizes.

The maneuvres, which will be carried out an as to cause a minimum amount of incon- venience to mercantile traffic, are expected to furnish, much valuable data concerning the protection of British commerce in time of war.

FOOTBALL FEROCITY.

AN APPALLING AMERICAN CASUALTY, LIST.

"Not so much a game as a buttle, in which "the aim of the combatants is to maim, if, nol to kill, each other," is the description which the Britisk Medical Journal gives of American football. And it prints a list of casualties which amply bear but this indictment..

During the last schson 27 men were killed in the American football war. An idea of the ferocity with which the "game" is played may be gained from a 'paper by Drs. E. H. Nicholls and H. B. Smith, who had medical charge of the Harvard · squad last season.

The strength of the squad at the beginning

of the season was 150.
