Macao, 16th April.

A sou'wester blew with terrific violence shonly before one o'clock this afternoon, The gals was accompanied by, a torrential down. pour of rain for quite halt an hour. To all appearances it seemed as if a tornado was sweeping cross these regions; fortunately, the storm was of short duration. The wind blew down the large matched which is every your put up at this time for a sort of Chinese theatre in the public square at laiti. A large number of the and ence who happened to be in the matshed during the storm were wounded by the collapse of the structure: some had to be carried away with fractured limbs, while others were removed to hospital suffering from

more or less serious injuries. Fortunately the maisted collap-ed after the religious function had been completed of what is kiterally translated.

from the Chinese as the "Ppening of the Peach,"

or the annual ceremony peculiarinthe nativeste miniscent of the world's creation. The congrega. tion on this occasion was unusually large. The large majority taking part in the festival bad left at its conclusion, but there were many others who remained to wait until the storm, subsided. Had the disaster occurred while the ceremony was in progress there is no knowing what the casualties might have been, when it is easily imagined that in the panic and rush for an exit the hundreds of Chinese gathered together under the thatched roof of the matshed would have trampled one another to death.

On Palm Sunday at ten o'clock in the fore- noon the wind veered from south to north, and cominued in blow a stiff gale with heavy rain showers for close on two hours. It is reported that it was a tornado. However, the damage caused by the storm is of little or na'conse. quence. From Lappathe repost reaches this city that a building collapsed burying seven Chin ese under the debris.

MASTER'S "CERTIFICATE SUSPENDED.

Before the Hon. Captain L. A. W. Barnes- Lawrence, R, N, Marine Magistra'e, an inquiry was held into the circumstances connected with the charge of negligent navigation preferred by Mr. E. Osborne, secretary of the "Star" Ferry Company, against Wong Yun Su, master of the steam launch Tarkor. Mr. Osborne stated that on the 14th-ins, at about 950 a.m., he was crossing to Kowloon in the Polar Star, and heard a whistle (one short blast), and saw the launch Taikoo a little abhít his starboard heam, going much faster than the Polar Star, Alter hearing her whistle the Polar Star starboarded her helm, and eased her engines, but it looked to him as if a collision would occur. He walk. ed forward and observed the Taikoo cross his | donda bows about 30 or 40 feet off, and having crossed ing proceeded round the Polar Star's hows to the Mei Taming lying at a buoy on his post quarter.

Mr. Innes, Superintendent of Messis. Hutter field and Swire, said he was a passenger in the Taikon, on the morning in question, The Taikoo cane gut from Butterfield and Swire's Fier and, proceeded to the Taming. 'After starting, he observed the Polar Star on his port bow, and he reckoned that as she was the crossing ship she had to give way. He could not say whether the Taikoo blew her whistle or not. She ported a little and after clearing the Polar Star starboarded to clear another launch,

To Mr. Osborne, witness said he was not aware, how the Taikęs came, out from the

Wong Yun Su, master of the Taikoo, said be blew one blast on his whistle to warn boats on his port side. He did not after his helm, He crossed the Polar Star's bows about (co yards off.

The master of the Polar Stur explained the position with models, and said the Polar Star starboarded her helm and eased her engines when he saw that the Tarks insisted on crossing his bows, and also went astern.

His Worship said: The Tatkoo was seen a Tittle abaft the starboard beam of the Polar dar nad making in a direction as if to cIOSE the latter's bows. The master of the Polar Star taiboaided her helm, cased her engures, and eventually went astern to allow he nogha Sɔ. The idea is to discourage the remittance of money to Macao otherwise than by means of the recently instituted money order system, Without in any way suggesting any dis- paragement of the officers of the postal department of Macau who may be and, if fact, are trippled officials, the power vested in the department of opening letters

be well if (fis Excellency would consider flist remitters send money at present as heretofore at their own risk and have not in pay the com. mission which a money order involves. Seeing that in many cases money is remitted for the subsistence of aged and poor parents where a saving, however small, can be effected it is at ways a consideration not to be lightly thought.
