The Eruption of Vesuvius.
LONDON, 12th April.
Their Majesties the King and Queen of Italy were welcomed deliriously on their return to Naples where the inhabitants are, in a state of panic, wailing crowds marching in religious processions through the streets all day.
The general use of masks, goggles, and dust coats makes Naples seem a city of motorists.
The rain of aslics and sand diminished yesterday evening.
13th April.
There is a general improvement in the situation at Vesuvius, and it is believed that the eruption has spent itself, the rain and the showers continue, but in greatly reduced volume.
Later,
The rain and the shower of ashes have completely ceased at Naples, the sky is clear and the sun bright.
Vesuvius is visible.
The public is regaining confidence and resuning its normai avocations.

At present, continues the Jiji, with the open- ing of the North China ports and Vladivostok, dhe shipping market has begun to show some activity. There is no doubt, however, that with the release of a large number of steamers from Government service in April, the market will suffer from over-tonnage, at any rate for a time. Certain foreign ship-owners, taking advantage of the war, have opened up trade in Japan's spheres of influence in China, and it is not at all improbable that new Euro- pean competitors will suo appear in Far
