It is reported that a Chinese merchant, a native of Shun-tak, who arrived in the Colony yesterday from his home, has been spreading rumours that trouble is brewing in that locality. c is stated to have said that an uprising in Sban-tak is expected during the 4th moon (May), nod that certain person is not killed before that time there is little prospect of the present tension abating, About & fortnight ago some difference of opinion arose between two class in the district, and it terminated in the death of a well-known villager. Since that time many attempts are alleged to have been made to avenge the death in question. A few days ago, the alleged mur deter of the village, despatched letter to the village of his rival and offered to pay 2,000 taels as compensation for the death of their man, pro- | vided no further attempts were made on his own life. The apposing party emphatically refused to receive any "blood money."
