Although an official information is at present available on the subject, we are in a position to state that the dim_of_Sir John Jackson (Limite:l) har secured, the contract for, con tructing new docks at Singapore, and that the amount of the contract le over two, million, sterling. The news will be especially welcome to the people of Devonport, where Sir John Jackson, who is at the head of the great dem of contractors, is held in the highest esteem. The firm has carried out important, contracts for public works in all parts of the world, and among the undertakings, at present in hand may be mentioned an extensive and costly Hongkona, and April. roy, water-powerschement Ballachulab, in Scotland, and barbour works at Simon's Town, South Africa. But in the Westcountry, Sir John Jack- son's firma is best known through the gigantic scheme of dockyard, extensions at Keyham which have cost nearly six millions sterling. and which, it is hoped, will be opened, by his Majesty the King next June or July During the time that the Keyham works have been in hand as many as 3.40 men have been employed by the contractors at one time, and at present there are about 1,500 engaged there, but towards the end of the year the works will have been practically completed, and the thousand of men who have from time to time been employed at Keyham will have found employment in all parts of the kingdom. Of those who have occupied higher positions under the firm at Keyham during the past ten years, some are now doing well in the remotent, corners of the world, and it may be taken for granted that others will soon be on their way to Singapore.

Hongkong, 3rd April, 1986,
I read in 'the London Daily Matt of January 19 (writes a correspordent to that paper of the following day), that Dr. Dowie has been per- manently removed from the financial contral of Zion City, owing to his "extremely profligato squandering of money." I had expected some such announcement for some time. The read-THE ing of the paragraph recalled to my mind a certain day in the summer before last, when, taking train from the city of Chicago, I found | myself an hour later within the sacred-city of the Dowieites.
After long waiting I secured an interview with the great man, and was ushered into an apartment of great size and greater elegance, Beautiful carpets covered the floor and costly. plctures adorned the walls; the desks were of oak, the ink-boitles of silver,
At his roll-topped secretaire sat the autocrat Dowie bimself, dressed in a morning suit of a High soft material that looked like silk, his long white bear falling over his breast and imparte ing a patriarchal appearance to the figure.

My first disappointment was when he rose to. bid me welcome. From bis photographs one gets the impression of a man who is tall and commanding in appearance, but the real beightAL is not more than jft 6in.
Some talk passed between us, and then he led me into his council chamber and pointed put the wonders thereof. The apartments at, Westminster are poor and shabby in com parison. Lofty ceilings, polished walls; solid tables and chairs, soft carpets and beautiful fittings of every description made me wonder whether I had not made a mi take, and been in some mysterious way wafied, into the council-room of a great cation,
