Princess Eba has had two very devoted friends all her life, one, her elder brother, Prince Alexander, the singer of comic, songs, who was with her when Spanish admiration was first offered to her, and was her companion at lessons for ten years, and in with her now Biarritz, the other, ber godmother, the Empress Hugenie. The brother and sister were greatly attached to their grandmother, albeit kept a bile in awe by her strici, old-fashioned and most where them both. The two children wholesome nursery regime; and Queen wera among the last relatives on whom the dying Queen's eyes rested, and one of her Majesty's last acts was to order a piece of furniture for Prince Alexander's room at school. But though more than half a century separates them, the Empress Eugenie and Prince Ena have been friends, confidantes, sympathisers throughout the youncer one's life; the young Princess has stores of knick-knacks, valuable jewels, books, and gifts of all kinds from her friend; and will probably, it is believed, inherit a large part of her fortune,

The young Princess's conversion to Roman Catholicism was more than half effected years ago, because this kindly godmother was long- Ling for it. The hours spent lately by Princess Ena at the Carmelite Church, in Church-street, Kensington, have been devoted to very little more than formal study of Roman creeds and practices; all the rent faith of the Roman Catholic Church came to her long ago, because it was the faith of the ex-Empress of

THE FUTURE QUEEN OF SPAIN,

A SKETCH OF PRINCESS ENA.

It was a spring morning, in the year 1930, writes a contributor to the "Daily Mail," when I stood in the Clarenca Victualling Yard at Portsmouth, among a small group of persons waiting for the arrival of the late Queen Victoria from Osborne, on her way to Windsor. The "Alberta" was due at eleven; and presently, through lines of harbour-ships, which broke their great flags as she entered, the Ilule white. decked yacht, with the sun shining over her royal standard and white onsign, came racing up the herbeur, and swung round into ibs Victualling Yard as the seven stroke of eleven clanged out from the dockyard clock. It was so that Queen Victoria-loved to have things done, and her officers never failed her.

the Frenchi.

Princess Ena, who, by the way, was born at

·Balmoral, an the first royal child born' in' Scotland for 100 years, was eight years old when her father died, and since the death of Queen Victoria she has shared her mother's life entirely. Princess Henry very soon discover. ed, somewhat to her amusement, that the public at various functions in the isle of Wight, had almost as warm a welcome for the Children" as for herself; Princess Ena was invited to be president of the Isle of Wight Juvenils Needlework Guild; and if Princess Henry had allowed it, her daughter might have opened as many bazaars and presided at as many meetings as herself. The "Queen of the Isle of Wight" as Frin- cess Heory is occasionally called, knew better, however, than to allow anything of the sort, and the young Princess led a very quite live, with plenty of music and a little yachting and a few children's parties (of which no an

she came out last cal nouncement might ever appear in the papers) Free musical studies have been as successful as there ut her mother, whose talent Mme. Blanche Mar chesi bas much admiration; and she is a faitly good linguist, talking three languages besides English.

Her Majesty walked to the train with ber little gracious bows to the waiting official, among whom, for some reason, a Spanish officer appeared, suddenly. I think he had come over on the Alberts, but in any case he had very lately bean prasantad sa Queen Victoria, and balled the traditions of his race in being very considerably #Eurried" thereby, Cooling down a title, he nodded towards a child who was Jumping into the train, and said that he had been watching

Life changed curiously little for the young Princess when she came out last season, Prin- ress Henry politely but resolutely declined to have her parties talked about by the public, and very little was known to the outside world even about the large ball at Kensington Palace, at which Princes Enx made her debui,

there. except that the King was

Prin cess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg kept her cousin company throughout ite season at Kensington Palace, and the two young peo ple one dark, the other fair, bosh cojoying themselves immensely wherever they went, were always popular guests. Admiration of very much the same kind as in her youth, ad miration for a healthy, active, happy English child, following Purcess Ena at all the parties given to her; and she laughed with everybody at everything, declining altogether to he formal, A young man came up in her fret ball at Ken sington Palace, asking somewhat stiffly and formally for the honour of a dance.

"Oh, are you sure you don's mind?" was the joking reply.

|

More than once during the visit of the King' of Spain to London, it became obvious that the two young people were thinking a good den of one another, A Indy in the royal party at the gala performance at the Opera claims to have been, first to proclaim the fact; and then everybody in the secret watched developments with such interest and sympathy as ectators will show the world over, in such matters. The Spanish Ambas. sador took Princess Henry down to tea at a large afternoon party, and there was a little buzz of talk; it became known that Princess Henry was being pressed to visit A'geciras in the winter, and everyone was delighted Fin ally, rumours and talea grew and multiplied

without ceritradiction.

And now all the world knows that the solemn grandeur of Spanish society, with its sixteenth century great ladies and mediaeval etiquette, is to be invaded by the laughter and freedom and liberalism of this young English Princess. A month after her marriage she will be the wonder and delight and terror of every woman in Spain,
