A NOBLE WORK.

BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY'S DIRTHDAY.

دریا

On March 7th, 1804, the British and Foreign Bible Society was founded. To-day, therefore, Is the tossunniversary of its birth,"

The reason why every Britisher who believes in his race and is glad of its success may take pride to his heart is this. For one hundred and one years, withot ceasing or flagging or fainting by the way, the Bible Society bar carried the iritish name to the ullermost ende of the earth, Brick by brih, stone by stone, for over a hundred years the Bible Society has been building a monument to British religious real and British unselfishness, the like of which the modern world cannot show.

Hy scattering the Bible over the world for a hundred years, Britain has declared her ac ceptance of the responsibility of doing what she can for the world's good. Whether what she has done has been for the world's good or not does not in the least sig ity. All the sime, I believe that nobody will feel the need of deny ing that the good has been enormous.

What is great is the unhesitating assumption of the role of world's leader, the role of agent 3 hat rarest, for the world's righteousneES. almost unknown thin, i the world-the self sacrifice of a nation for the nat ons-this is very great.

A man may be a bea hen, and yet stand and wonder at, and admire the achievement of the Bible Sneirty. If were not Christi mity, but any other religion, that the society were pro- pagating, its work would still be margalficent.

NEITHER BECT NOR SCHISM.

As a triumph of enterprise and a miracle f organisation, I suppose that this uncommercial society cannot be surpassed by any commercial undertaking that the world has ever produced. As for cuterprise, ne land is too remote, too barbarous for the society's emissaries. The society's place' in the march of the world is ahead of civilisation.

Moreover, the society's house in Queen Victoria-street is the nave of a wherl whose spokes end in the unmapped steppes of Mon- golia, the unhewn forests of Draz. The things which happen to each colporteur there and on the whole circumference of a circle whose ralii Louch th rematest places, of the world, each Bible that he sells or gives away, all thesa things are known in Queen Victoria-street. This is organisation.

No less masterly is the internal organisation The Bble Sariety af Queen Victoria-street. knows neither sect not, schism Or, rather, it knows them anty to nullify them, for the rule is that a strict balance of sects shall bo preserved in the administratios. There can His money affairs are ba no, dominant party directed not by divines, but by bud-ise.ded Christian men ofisines who are probably not to be beaten the wald over. The Bible Society's finances are never in a muddle,

On the other hand, the executive are mostly divines. They have the enthusiasm and they take the work-in which enthusiasm can work miracles. Ahuracles of finance they may not

attempt.

The Bible Society knew of the virtual cer- tainty of the usso-Japanese war long before diplomatic relons were broken off, and laid its plans according'y. The printing presses we a quickly set to work, and many hundreds of Japanese and Russian knapsack Itibles were struck off. When the war came these were ready to be sold or given to the soldiers leaving.for the front.

War is war, and it is characteristic of that level sanse which has made the society greal' that it recognises war and prepares for it, leaving the abuse of it to whoever has breath to wante. But just as the society disarms sect and schism, as it reduces 1 es to a common basiz. To it, armies are neither Japanese nor Russian (except tyngraphically), but just aggregates of men with sputs, and at the beck of death,

To the society, Boer was the same as Briton Beither worse nor even beller Many thousands of both armies carred the society's Bibles So also in the trouble between China and the

Powers And there was the singular spectacle of half a dozco world Powers, all either loes or rivals, but all bidden godspeed for this world or the next by the Bible Fociety.

None has better case to remember the little wars of Britain than the society. And whether it be Turk and, Greek, Turk and Pussian, French and German or a melee of nations, the society is never indifferent.

J

WELCOMED BY 1HR NATIONS.

Long before the railway reached Manchuria the Bible Society was there. And there could not be a more striking testimony to its characte than that Russia, the exclusive, who will have no saissionaries upon her land, takes the colporteur to her bosom and gives free living and transport for himself and his Tib'es on the poverty-stricken Siberian railway. Never a gang of convicts passes to exile in Siberin but the society's people meet them and read to them and give Scriptures to whosoever will have them.

There is no institute of languages in the world which can approach the society's Bible house. From that house hae issued Christian Scriptures translated into 70 different tongues, And hurdreds of longues are known to be still untouched. Scholarship, labour, and devotion without measure have been spent to achieve this result. To win back a very little of what was lost at the Tower of Babel

very hard.

Osly quite recently Archdeacon Mackay revised the Cree Bible (8.akachewan Indians)

with a typawiiter fitted with Cree character
