said Lord. Chatham, "is a plant of slow growth." People believe in things that they ses, and in a broad sense they are right What is sometimes called blind faith is not falth at all. There must be reason and fact to form a foundation for trust. In regard to a medicine or remedy, for example, people ask, "Has it cored others? Have cases like mine heen relleved by it? Is it in harmony with the truths of modern science, and has it a record shove suspicion? If so, it is worthy of confidence ; and if 1 am ever attacked by any of the maladies for, which it is commended shall resort to it in full belief in its power to help me." On these lines

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION has won its high reputation among medical men, and the people of all civilized countries. They trust it for the same reason that they trust in the familiar laws of nature or in the action of common things. This effective remedy is palatable as honey and contains all the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. It quickly eradicates the poisonous, disease-breeding acids and other promotes the sormal action of the organs, toxic matters from the system; regulates and

gives vigorous appetite and digestion, and is infallible in Prostration-following Fevers, Anemia, Scrofulo, Influenza, Wanding Diseases, Throat and Lung Troubles, etc. Dr. W. A Young, of Canada, says: "Your tasteless pre- paration of cod liver oil has given me uniformly satisfactory results, my patients having been of all ages." It is a product of the skill and science of to-day and is successful

most successful trial trip.

Capt. Jamieson, late of the C. M. S. Taithum, was in command during the trip, and Capt. Best acted as pilot. Throughout the trip' everything worked very smoothly indeed. The vessel antwered every call mada upon her, the' engines worked most smoothly, and there was a complete absence of vibration. The Hsinkong compares most favourably, with her sistership the Brinchang, which was constructed at home between the boats shows that our local shipping and arrived out here lately. A comparison companies need go no further afield than Shanghai when they require the construction- of a really serviceable Chinn coaster.

THE SITUATION IN CHINA.

IMPRESSIONS IN AMERICA,

Washington, Feb. 6.

Reports continue to pour into the Depart ment of State from diplomatic and consular agents in China regarding the rapid increase of feeling against Americaps and things Ame- rican, as expressed in edicts issued by local authorities in various parts of the empire. For six months the situation in China has been the [ subject of very genuine concern to the Depart- meat, and Mr Rockhill, the American Minister [277 at Peking. is under instructions to keep

Washington thoroughly and-frequently inform ed of the situation. He is also exerting him self at the Chinese capital in an effort to check or allay the anti-foreign feeling that appears to be growing.

While not admitting that the situation is one of immediate danger, the officials here would not be at all surprised at any developments a month may bring forth

Although at the outset demanding only a raturn to the provisions of the original Exclusion Treaty of 1880, which excluded from this

country Chinese labourers without specifying the classes of Chinese which should be admitted; in some provinces manifestoes have been issued declaring that if the boycott is rigidly adhered to Americana will be forced to forego any ex- clusion at all. Such expressions have been immediately deried by Mr. Rockhill at Peking. Although directed primarily agains: Ameri- cans, the feeling of ill-will that seems to be growing in various parts of the empire is interpreted by Orientalists to have a far deeper meaning. In a word, it is declared to be sati- foreign, and there are indications that all foreigners, with the possible exception of Ja panese, will soon be as keenly affected as are Americans,

Informal representations regarding the Chio. ere. situation already have been exchanged between some of the European Powers, but. thus far this country has not called foreign nations into consultation, because there in a EALED TENDERS in Duplicate will be very general feeling among the European SEALED N.
