There seemed a bare possibility is the Prince Arthur will be seated immediately middle of the day that the weather would clear facing the stage on which a play will be tin, but the guarding of the weather secrets, 30 performed during the progress of the banquet, far as Hongkong is concerned, was not ap-lustrative of life in China goo years ago, parently in complaisant mood, and when the the performers being young boys from the Choy Royal party resolved to start from Government House for Deep Water Bay it was still drizzling, a misty Scotch penetrating drizzle. However, being an Englishman and accustom ed to weather vagaries, His Royal Highness decided to take the chances and his suite were of the same mind. It is a moral certainty that the majority of Hongkong residents, all, in fact, but a few lively spirits, who seem im- pervious to the elements and laugh at foi- lune's little ways, would have abandoned the trip altogether, but the Prince was not to be gainsaid. Amid the most appropitious circum- stances the Royal guest and entourage took their somewhat dismal way in chairs towards Murray Pier.

His Royal Highness was accompanied by Admiral Sir Edward Seymour General Sir Thomas Kelly-Kenny, Mr. Lampson, Captain Wyndham, and Lieut. Arbuthnot-Leslie, A.D.C. His Excellency the Governor, having business to transact, did not visit Deep Water Bay, nor did Admiral Sir Gerard Noel, nor Lord Redesdale.

↑ of the principal and "princely" houses were decorated with devices which could be il luminated

as night fell but the others of less affluence perhaps, but filled with the same spirit of loyalty, were content with flags and hosts of lanterns of all shapes and shades Alas, when the rain came down in a steady drizzls and was lowly absorbed by the drooping flags, the general appearance was scarcely suggestive of that spontaneous spirit of loyalty which, animated the hearts of those who had hoped to earn a momentary word of praise from the repras entative of the Sovereign. Hope grew and faded again as the afternoon word away and there seemed no likelihood that a strong cut- burst of sunshine would charm away the rain. god, and send the flags waving as joyously as it would raise the spirits of the public.

THE ARCHES.

The 'Chipese community in Hongkong ara well represented by their decorations in honour of Prince Arthur of Connaught. Every in- dividunt concerned in the decorations has done his best to make them a feature of the wel- come. Especially in their erection of triumphal arches are the Chinese successful, and on this occasion they seem in have outdone previous efforts. In the middle of Queen's Road East with

dome towering over 100 feet high stands one of these works of art. Spectators stand in ama amazement at the triumph of labour there to be

is seen. This tower with its many storeys in the upper part decorated with richly coloured matting, with good paintings, while the lowerpart is covered with carved wood of a polden colour, while chandeliers are hanging from the ceilings. Coming along Queen's Road and moving westwards there is to be seen a very prominent - arch just midway between the Central Market and the Clock Tower. This structure with its varigated colours and with the sun shining on it presented a most picturesque appearance to-day. At each corner hangs what represents bells contrived out of brown bamboo. Just under the archway, and at both entrances hang from the ceilings large cases of wax figures; these are repeated at the sides. The wax dolla with some of their faces painted are dressed in different colours, of silk, while the corners of their dresses are studded with tinsel omaments which present a sparkling appearance, At the side of the archway and in gold letters are inscribed: Welcome to Your Royal High- ness. Good luck to you and may you' live a long life of happiness."

Just west of the Central Market stands na- other imposing structure, which although not quite so high as the previous one, is of the same design and picturesqueness, while pots of flowers in full bloom are placed on stands at the side and under the archway.

The arch which spans the thoroughfare on Queen's Foad West, near to the Brigade Station, is a very clever piece of work, and shows enormous attention to detail. A similar description of greeting to our Royal visitor hangs under the archway and there are large chandeliers which, when sparkling in the sun give a very fine appearance to the whole. At the sides are beautifully carved pillars in gold, and lower down the heads of dragons are also carved. Bangles hang around their necks completing a picturesque and unique structure, Mention must also be made of the splendid carving of birds and flowers adjoining this arch.

Following this route until well past the Ke Shing theatre there are many of these atructures of the same design and colour, while there is another in Bonham Strand West.

In Bonham Strand itself there are several

of these Oriental signs of welcome. And a glimpse of Des Voeux Road West shows that they have not omined these charming and valuable tributes to Prince Arthur.

Elaborate arrangements had been made, and in several quarters partially carried out for illuminating the lower level, but man... proposed" and Jupiter discomposed," and many a firm had its fakis busily occupied in taking in the Chinese lanterns that had such a short time before been hung oul, to wait a somewhat problematical change in the weather. The "official" illumination Includes the electric light festoonery around the Queen Victoria Statue, which is being outlined in white lights, the Royal Monogram, surmount. ed by a representation of the British Crown at Government House, and the Royal Monogram

AT THE KO SHING THEATRE, 1,458,000.00

Since Royal visitors have visited Hongkong 603,279.97 it was been the invariable custom of the Chin ess community to invite Their Royal High nesses to come among the people and enjoy that hospitality which, of course, is proverbial. The Duke of Edinburgh was entertained by the Chinese, as likewise were the Duke and Duchess of Connaught. Following old custom then, His Royal Highness Prince, Arthur of Connaught will dine with the leading members 146,640.00 of this influential community in Hongkong to- night. A glance at the menu will show that s typical Chinese banquet will be served, and it would be a trifle interesting to know what 41,429.10 the Prince thinks of the Chinese delicacies. 8,7241.00 The bluff Dake of Edinburgh had rather a good ward for it on the whole, though be lamented the absence of the conventional kaife and fork, and expressed his doubt of what to choos 470.00 among so many different dishes which, to his 253.53 1.87

mind, lasted the same. The Prince will be received at the Ko Shing theatre by the Chinese committee which supported the Hon. Da He Kai, cu.0, when he was reading the address from the Chiness community to His Royal Highness yesterday. Dr. Ho Kat will preside at the banquet, and the Chinese re- presentatives, who will be seated in immediate proximity to His Royal Highness, are as follows: Hon. Mr. Wei Yuk, Mesams. STREET DECORATIONS.

BADLY SPOILED BY RAIN,

The Hongkong Hotel is a mass of Chinese lantern festoonery from a'tic to basement, while Powell's, Cottam's, Watson's and Kruse's are aid ready to show what the Colony can do in the way of illumination. In the Chinese quarter arrangements are on the same scale of lavish display of lanterns and banners, while fire crackers are at a premium. Thus if the weather conditions only change to "favourable" the City of Victoria to-night should indeed emulate a scene from Arabian Nights.
