APTEK BANISHMENT, pri

What induces a Chinese subject, after he has been deported as an undesirable char acter, to risk liberty and life in order that he may remain in the Colony from which he has been banished? Cases occur aliost daily at the Magistracy, in which the accused in charged with returning to Hong kong, after having been carefully escorted, aboard an outgoing steamer and told that if he return he will be severely punished and re-deported. The other day, a Chinaman, who had been sentenced to a long term of imprisonment for being implicated in a burglary, was banished by order of the Court: Ou completing his sentence, he Was led aboard a Canton boat, and the police officials having seen the vessel leave the wharf, walked away satisfied that they had done their duty That same day or the day, following, the outlaw takes up his residence--not in an obscure hovel or a' teeming hive, but next door to a police station. Within a fortnight he is again arrested on a charge of burglary, That is only an isolated instance; the Magis trates' rolf must be crammed with similar cases, and the annual police returns positive,

mals, Why cannot some of the Nimradof Hongkong inaugurate a great hun hd thus clear out these monsters which hay be come a menace to the Chinese? Innient women and laughing children would befor-. ever thankful to anyone who would diver' them from this curat, which they dra so much. The Chinese seem to have 'no fill in, exterminating or catching thess wily beix, or perhaps they fear to molest them, lest thilger spitita may injure their persons in the fure, Be that as it may, it is a great shame it not more than too to 120 miles from Hojkang within easy reach, these wild beasta a per- mitted to carry on their depredations, those birds once try a good-sized tiger for darget, who delight to shoot the innocent and Irmless

and the Chinese will rise up and c them blessed, and immortalize their name al deed ; in verse."
