HINESK "LÓSSRS IN THE WAR.
CLA'M FOR COMPENSATION.
It is estimated by vernacular contemporaries that 20,000 Chinese wäis killed in Manchuria during the war, and damage to the extent of 10 million dollars is stated to have been sustained to Chinesa property,
The Chinese Government intended to demand compensation for this loss from the Japanese and Russians, and it is reported that 'during the recent negotiations in Peking ibe Chinese Plenipotentiaries' hinted their in- tention to Baron Komura.

The Japascio representatire jointed out the difficulty of establishing the responsibility of the parties, as it would be almost impossible to discrimina • between the damage, done by Japanese and by Russians. He declared that. the "Japazase Government would pay com.and.tt-Japanese. pensation for any damages that could be proved by evidence to have been done by the Japanese, The Chinese Plenipotentiaries Anally decided to claim · compensation from the Russian Government for elesses sustained by Chinese during the Vladivostok disturbances,
