other causes. Prices for Japan coal continue high, and would seem to make 5 business; to Southern ports anyhow, almost impossible. The Hongay mines will close'.up fram January to 10th February, in connec tion with the Chinese New Year which falls due on the 251b prox. and Yangtse freight, what little there might have been of them for outsiders, cannot be counted upon for prompt sow since the new likin tax is reported having come into operation after the 25th instant, and is interfering with fresh chartering for the present. As for shipping prospects generally for 1905, if there has been # very por Saigon .crop last season, the recent wor has for
many steamers to profitable employment, and, if. repons may be trusted if next year's Cochin. china rice crop is a large one, an enormous increase in, tonnage in Eastern waters will have to be reckoned with. An improvement in tramp freights at home, and the dull times now experienced out here, have been instru: mental already in the removal from Eastern waters of some few boats, of others it is tumoured that they will be going, but many more may accept homeword charters and yet leave a sufficiently large number to compete." It is probably correct to assume that freight-rates in the South during the chauing year will largely depend upon whether the Northern centage of the ava lable tonnage as some claim they will, also, whether or not Japanese-owned steamers will enter the open market to compete for freights in Southern waters,
