The following jury was empanelled: E. J. Chapman (Foreman), W. D. V. Pigrum, R. Willion, T. Slade, W. Turner, J. F. Miller and P. Hett.
Sir Henry Berkeley, Attorney General, in- structed by Mr, G. Morrell, of the Crown Solicitor's office, appared for the prosecution, and Mr. H. Slade, instructed by Mr. C. F. Dixon, of Mr. John Hastings, office, deforded.
Both sides baving been heard, the jury after a short retirement, returned a verdict of not guilty against the second defendant on account of want of sufficient evidence, and he was accordingly discharged. They loand the first defendant guilty of The minor charge of man slaughter, and his Lord hip was about to pro nounce sentence, when Mr. Blade applied for An arrest of Judgment, on the ground of wrong. Indictment, but this his Lordship over-ruled and sentenced the first defendant, a man 69 years of age, to three years! imprisonment with haid labour.

Mr. R. Nicholson, a clerk in the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank; testified that the note produced was a very bad one. It was badly printed, the numbering was illegible, and the figures" were too small. The note was also printed on greasy paper of Japanese manufacture which the Bank does not use,
Evidence was led in support of the above facts.
Defendant pleaded ignorance of the fact that the note was not genuine. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty, by a majority of 5 to 2, and the prisoner was accordingly discharged.

The first case called was a charge of assault and robbery with violence. The facts were that on the 13th of July last, Wong Choy and Wong Sum Kwang, at midnight, in the village of Bam Chun, in the New Territory, did. break into the house of Lal Yuen Sun, a grocer, have ing a shop in the said village, and then by force and threats, they being armed with bam boo poles, forced Lai Yuen Sum to tell them where he kept his valuables. He refused to do this and they tied his hands behind his thrashed ground, and back, pressed him to the bim until he told them where the property was. They then opened a drawer of the counter in the shop and took Sar from it from the shop, they stole a jacket and umbrella, and then from an inner room they took a revolver, and a musket, a watch and chain, and some other small articles with which they made off, and were later arrested on board a lime bost in the harbour.
