HOW AMERICAN GOODS, ENTER CHINA.
There are no signs whatever that the boycott movenient is abating, in this district. It is Curious to relate that Three Castien cigar Butes, or the imilation of that, brand, find no sie bere in Wuchow, while Manila cigar- ettes "which come from the American. colony of the Philippinë. Islands, are sold here, oven though they bear the stamp in Chinese declaring the place of their origin in be Manila. American canned goods such as preserved fruits, meat, etc., are rejected with the utmost rigour by the Chinese. I have heard it stated that certain dealers have sent the goods to be re packed and re-inbelled in Japan, so that when they return it may appear as if the consent originally belonged to that country and had no connection with America. They are re-landed nt Wuchow and sold as articles of Japanese maqufacture. This appears to be the only way

DIBLES FOR SOLES NOT SOULS.
A short time back, certain missionaries were elated at the fact that Bibles pubilibed by the mission societies they represented found a ready and immense sale in the interior. In their enthusiasm the missionaries reported to their headquarters in Cantap that a grand op portunity presented itself for the work of pro selytizing the Chinese, who were now 'mast re- sponsive had begging for Christian Bibles They described the avidity which they displayed for the Bibles," and indeed. it" | seemed as if the Chinese had just awakened to the value of the scriptures. But, alas! for human hopes, When this rush for Bibles came to be probed to the battom it was dig- covered that the smallness of the cost of the Bibles, which the missionaries were sure were being used for the purpose of converting the Chinese to Christianity, had really induced the natives to buy the Bibles simply for their in trinsic value as paper. Instead of being used ló convert souls to Christianity the Bibles were being converted into soles for Chinese shoes, The Chinese found the paper of the Bibles was cheaper than the Chinese hand made paper used in making sales of shoes, and so the demand for Bibles arose.

This elegy is truly applicable to the state' of Israel in our days. Russia is a living proof of its.correctness. No amount of sophistry 'canSavereign ..... convince us to the contrary. The blood of our martyred brethren cries unto us and we feel ourselves impotent to redress the wrong. We have no country of our own; we have not a united government under whose wings we can live in peace and harmony; but we have a tie stronger than a fatherland, à patriolism stronger than the community of one govern; ment; our tie is a sincere brotherly love; our patriotism is the tie which unites us to one an- other.
