Next to him, and no less set apart as touch- ing the rest of the school, the prefect. It is the paradox of the public school world that the les a prefect knows of the inferior lives about. Convention pictures the lower school boy at tourle-headed, uncouth urchin, with crumpled collar and inky hands. Service and scuffing certainly make him occasionally dishevailed. In the main he has very strict ideas on the subject of dress, In happiest moments he is a suave, polished young gentleman, particularly 'sensitive to the ridiculousness of wearing satin ties when his world demand silk, or stripey "bags" when fashion calls checks.
LIMBO.
Betweeen these two precisely-shaped extra mities, the Olympians and the Ganymedes, lies the great amorphous mass of the middle class, full of sliding distinctions of tastes, interest, and achievements, but always the least clearly defined and the most difficult to control.
Here are to be found the small boys whose. cleverness is carrying them up the school ra pidly, though in years and size they should belong to the fagging class, great boys whose backward brains keep them in clagging medio crity, born lonfers, and eccentrics so possess d

one particolar hobby-c rpentering, natural history, an 1 so forth-that they are literally in capable of thinking of the things which lead to ordinary advancement.
Even the fags have their absolute rights, the chief of which is that none but a prefect may fag them. But the rights of the middle class are beyond definit on. Its highest rank-mem bere of the house or even the school elaven- canrot be excused prefect's licking when found in error. Yet here, a
