THE AMERICAN BOYC077

AT WUCHOW.

[From Our Own Correspondent.]

Wuchow, 14th November, 1905.. From the time it started in Wuchow, the boychit movement against American manu factures has gradually developed, and is now | as deep sea throughout this district as it is at Canton itself. Not a drop of Standard Oil Co's oil, nor an American cigarette has been retailed hers for some time. The Standard Oil Co's Chinese agent at Wuchow has re. ceived more than one anonymrus letter threat. ening his life if he does not sever his connec. tion with the American Company,

came news from the country to the American

Baptist Mission here, shat at a place called Tarunchow (3 days' journey up river from Wachow), which had recently been visited by Two members of that mission, two of their con- veils had been beaten by the popolace. One man received 200 strokes, and a woman receiv. ed 1,000. Tseungchow had not been visited by any member of the American Baptist Mis. sion for seven years and it is supposed that the recent visit of Mr. Meadows and Mr. Tipton excited the people to this act, which took place after their departure from the place. The con- vents were blamed for bringing foreigners to the place again, and the fact that the foreigners were Americans probably had something to do with it.

Soon after dawn yesterday morning it was reported in Shanghai that the N.-D. L. S Prinz Regent Luitpold, bringing the German mail of the roti ultimo, was ashore outside Woosung. This was a fact, and the greatest credit is due to the agent and officials of the Norddeutscher Lloyd that the mail arrived in Shanghai shortly after 18. a m., and that the northern mail was transferred to the str Knivsberg for "Tsingtao long before that hour,, The Prins Regent Luitpold arrived outside Woosung on Saturday night at about 11.50 pm. and was proceeding to her usual anchorage, but presumably in trying to avoid the st. Tremont, anchored in the vicinity, she went aground between. Lismore Light and the Block

At the same time as news of the Lien-chan massacre reached Wechow, orders were received by the American Missionary Societies here, from their Consul-General in Canton, to call in all their members working in this district. Up to the end of last week this step was not con-house Buoy, and as she came in on three sidered necessary. Shortly after that, however, qutiter food the incoming lide derved to put her further aground rather than to aid in dis. lodging her. The Shanghai Tug and Lighter Company'stug boat Recked, steam lighter Wat tung, and half-a-dozen other lighters were awaiting her arrival to take off -caigo, and the Waltung approached the mail steamer, but finding that she was aground, advised the Rocket not to come too close but to stand by, In the meantime the mail tender Bremen got hawsers fixed and attempted to sow the Prins Regant Luitpold off, but after a thirty-five minutes' trial had to abandon the attempt for the time being. Soon after two o'clock yester day morning the Rocket, Wattung, and the baggage lighter were able to get along-ide and later the Bremen was able to transfer the northern mul to the str. Knivsbere. The Bremen lay alongside the mail steamer and funk on board the passengers' baggage, but about 7.15am, it was found that she was touch- ing ground and the assistance of the Rocket was asked, the later boat towing the Bremen THE off successfully. At this t'maike Prina Repant Luitpold bad a list of from it to 15 degrees, Word was sent to Shanghai, and at 8 am the tendèrs Victoria and Samios went down to render assistance, and were busy during the whale of yesterday in the attempt to tow the mail steamier off. The departure of the tender. Bremen, conveying mai's and passengers to the Prins Regent Luftpold for Japan, has been postponed until 5 p.m. to-day,"

Yenerday it became known amongst foreigners in Wuchow that on Sunday. next at 1 p.m. acere mony of soma sert is to be held on the parade ground, during which the photograph of the founder of the boycolt movement in Shanghai (the late Fung a Wei) will be displayed and specially honoured,

This province has always been in a chronic state of rebellion which is one year caused by the poor rice crop and a resulting famine, and another year by a good rice crop and a result ing overtaxation by the officials. It is quite natural thing for the ignorant country people to promote revolt or trouble every year.

The boycott feeling now so deeply rooted throughout the province, and the strongly mani fested antipalay of the Viceroy and, lekin off. this river, are factors which might help to excite cials shown lately towards, foreign interests on the ignorant poople into a general anti-foreign. movement at any time.JAVOLO DE MAS
