For the fortnight ending 21 November, 1905, 354 houses were cleansed and lime-washed by the Sanitary officials.

The plaintiff therefore claims payment by the defendant of the said sum of $21,400 with in the date of the writ of summons herein, until terest thereon at the rate of 8% per annum from
payment or judginent;, for the costs of the Cause and for such other and further relief as to the Court might seem fit and proper.

For the defence it was stated that the defend. ant admitted the first paragraph of the plain tiff's claim, and also the second paragraph, but said tha' from the 28th April, 1995, he had been suspended from his employment as such shroff, Defendant admitted that the plaintiff entered in 10 a bond on October 3rd, yog, and also that defendant entered into such an agreement in writing on October 3rd, but denied that the terms are correctly set forth in the statement of claim. The defendant denied that there was a deficiency of $21,400 as alleged in para graph 5 of such statement, or of any other sum did not sccount for all monies received and and denied that he was unable to account and paid by him on the said date. Among the sums paid out by the defendant on the said date was a sum of $11,403 which was paid out in bank notes by the defendant in respect of a duly chopped cheque which was duly brought to him. After payment out of such sum of $11,400 the said cheque was handed by the defendant in due course to the second shroff, when the accounts were made up at the end of the day's business the said cheque was miss- ing and could not be produced as a voucher for the payment of the said anm of $21,400. The defendant denied that the plaintiff was compelled to pay the said sum of $1,400 to the Bank as alleged. If any such sun was pald by the plaintiff it was not paid on his be half or, at his request. DISQUIETING REPORTS. Hitherto the Department of Agriculture and Commerce has followed the practice of issuing. a forecast of the rice harvest twice a year-at midsummer and at the beginning of autumn. The Vice- Minister emphatically repudiated the allegation that in view of the remarkable discrepancy in the returns the Department of Agriculture and Commerce must have issued false and epilmis the Department had simply compiled the the returns of the rice harvest. He added that returns from the reports received from various local authorities. The difference between the two returns may have been due to mistakes made by the local authorities. The Depart ment was considering all possible measures for the relief of the districts threatened by famine.
