"Certain of my contract coolies found the beast in a disused well," chattered Mr Ah Tong, and having bound him with cords, they brought him hither. It was very good luck," he addad reflectively.

He halted outside. à remote coolie-house "and spoke in their own uncouth dialect to a group of men lounging near the entrance, and was answered by one of the party, who, with every appearance of undisguised, satisfaction, invited them to enter.

Certainly, the animal is heroj" he said, in the vemacular, to the Englishman, "but and he qualified his statement with the man- ner of one on whom Fortune' had played a shabby trick--"he is not very fat, after all,”;

Of the Pope's six sisters three are married, and live in their native province. The other three were their illustrious brother's constant companions-and-two of them have followed him from the archi-episcopal palace of Venice to the piazza of St. Peter's. The house in which the Signorine Ross and Maria Sarto occupy a fat was formerly a palace of the Rusticucci family. The ground floor is occupied by shops. A small side door is reserved for the use of the Pope's sisters, and opens onto a silent and seemingly deserted stair-case. On reaching the third floor, a ring at the hell is instantly un- swered, and the visitor is admitted without he sitation, first to an antechambar paved with squares of black and white marble. Along the walls are soins upholstered in blue, and ihres small tables, or which lie large albums, bound in parchment bearing the pontifical, arme, stand about the room. A door admits me to "a simply, furnished sitting-room. The furniture is covered with greep tapestry,&S. and hanging of the same draps the windows and doors After a few moments, one of the sisters enters with profuse apologies for the delay, Her Venetian accent is rather pleasing. She appears to be a little past so, with kindly dark eyer in a benevolent face, expressive of the almost ́nimplicity and self-forgetfuless. Her dress is of black woullen material, over which she wears a large apron; a pair of scissors hangs by a black ribbon from the belt. Her only ornament is a slender gold chain supporting a medal at her throat. The other sister immediately follow, attired similarly -in black; she appears somewhat the younger, but the resemblance between the two is strik. Ing, and even more so their likeness to their august brother.
