The first indicates the charactor of the ridges on the thumb-whether whorls," loops, arches, or composites; the second, the special feature of the form and middle fingers combined; and the fourth, the number of ridges on the little finger. This general classification brings fifty, sixty, or even a hundred records. into one pigeon-hole, but it is so carefully "worked "out" that although there are "han- dreds of pigeon-hules with nearly, a millio of Impressions (counting un to each case) an ex- Andalusin, Ger... 3477, M. Having extracted the record which he be lieves is wanted, he first of all proceeds to count the ridges on the ten finger-prints, and if each number taliles with that on the impression accompanying the inquiry he next carefully notes every point of resemblance in the forme tion, placing, and direction of the ridges. As far as the working of the system is con- cerned, the ck sext investigation reveals no de fect or possibility of injustice. It has stood the test of many years as an aid to identification in India and Chion, and in South Africa finger-print identification of the natives and Chinese is found invaluable.

Now they come in during any weather, and lie in close enough when high seas are running. Coming and going, one of these colossi are at Dover four dsye out of the seven.
