not self-supporting, there is no valid reason why It should not become so, as soon as the public. the variety of the realise that not only as articles made, but also in the matter of work: manship, it would be difficult for the most ex acting and fastidious customernet tebe satisfied Cabinet-making, turnery, and baskets, from the plainest to the daintiest kind; suites of Lilli patian furniture:"such, as would grace. the house or flat" of any doll in Belgravia or Maylair, everything of the best and most nished order, and the handwork of man who cut off from the active professions of their choice, have had to begin life anew and learn a iride, after coming through the Valley of Death
many of them,
It is in itself something good to see these men at work: it is one more plea for univers. service the smart, brisk, quick, "soldierly" way they tackle the job in hand, Put the er. dinary British workman engaged in piecework alongside one of these "service" men, and the difference would very soon be glaringlyappa rent. Two instructors work with the beginners in the workshop, but most of the men now, co- gaged in the Brompton-road branch are an ex- pert at their trades as to be entrusted within sh« Class work. At the time of our visit a beaulls fully-made walnut-wood bookcase was being completed-an order this, for commissions are gladly taken for copies of furniture as well as original designs (many men showing taste and originally in this line), and also for repairs, even to the simple re-seating of caue-bottomed chairs Nothing comes amiss to the soldier and sailor workinen.
Beneath the hum and busy cheeriness, there is, for the unlooker, yet the touch of sadness- how can it be otherwise? The very eagerness of those who having fought a good fight-and return, battered and halt, to fight again their "little best"-surely there is pathogin it Sure ly if ever workmen deserved well of the British Public-the stay-at-home-in-case-and-safety pu blic-it is thesel China, India, Africa, all three have taken it out of them, ond of the For instance, one man, formerly a private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, is now a first-class carpenter. He was incapacitated from service by a severe wound in the head, and, owing to a bone pressing on the brain, is subject at times to his. Nevertheless he does most excellent work, and is so interested in his new employment that he even spends his spare hours at home doing inlay work. Another, late 6th Dragoons, had his spine injured, and can now do only sedentary work; he has, however, developed into a quick and expert basket-ma ker. A sailor man, who lost a leg in China is like all our boys in blue," handy with his needle, and so is invaluable in preparing the Canvas for deck-chairs And lastly, to mention. but one more out of the dozens of interesting cases we could instance, there is a Northumberland Fusilier, who was shot at Klerksdorp, and being taken for dead by his comrades, was used as.additional "cover, with the result that he received eight bullets in his body, and lost most of his ribs. He now, poor fe low, has to wear a sice and felt waistcoat to keep him from collapsing alto: gether, while pluckily pegging away at his basket-making
ས
As it has been found only possible to employ twenty-three men regularly at the Brompton- read work-rooms, on account of the limited space, a good many men have the work given out to them in their own homes: These men. employed by the London branch, it should furthermore be noted, are all married men, mostly with families to support, a fact which in itself speaks volumes for the society's 15le as that of a Friend In Need.. The single men who are able to qualify for the work are sent
